Hey guys,

Really new to PC stuff - been a console gamer all my life and never really opened up a PC in my life! I have decided to take apart an old laptop from like 9 years ago or something, and was potentially going to replace the CPU and add a stick of RAM so I could hand it over to my Mom who needs a very basic laptop that runs fine just doing basic browsing etc. I know I could probably go out and buy a cheap chromebook or something for her, but this seems like a good way to get to know how to change out a processor/thermal paste etc!!

It currently has a Core i5-2430M installed, but I have no idea how to work out what processor will be compatible with this laptop!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

FYI, the laptop is a VPCEH21N1E Sony Vaio I believe... (CORRECTION: Model: VPCEH21NE)

Unless it is a very old laptop, processors on laptops are usually soldered to the motherboard and not interchangeable. Highly suggest you open it first and double check whether your processor is socketed or not first. Please do keep in mind that even if it is socketed, there is a very big chance that the BIOS is not going to support another processor, than the one that is already installed.

You can't unless you are very talented and have a lot of expensive gear to remove the soldered CPU and solder in another chip (the i5 2430M is a BGA, or ball grid array type of chip so it HAS to be soldered). At best you can maybe upgrade memory (it's DDR3 SO-DIMM) depending on the board and how much you have in there.

Edit: should read Intel's ARK more carefully. It's a BGA package on a LGA substrate. *facepalm*

the biggest possible upgrade for something like that is replacing the hard drive with an SSD. Many times faster overall, and improves the entire experience. Maybe more ram, if more than 4GB is needed, but the SSD first is the biggest factor. A CPU upgrade would be a pretty minimal improvement to web browsing, and would also reduce battery life.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

I opened it up to clean the fan and heatsink earlier, and I thought the CPU was removable at that point - I didnt touch it as didnt want to break anything haha

will take another loook but thanks guys!

The i5 2340M is an LGA   Sorry that's PGA - socketed processor.

It can be upgraded so long the bios supports the desired chip. Good luck finding that information, your part number doesn't help.

I may have typed it wrong - VPCEH21NE. My mistake! Where would you search and find that info? Sorry, completely new to all this ahah

My bad. It is actually socketed. I did not read the information on Intel's ARK carefully enough. The chip itself is BGA on an LGA substrate. As mentioned by @ShrimpBrimeyou need to find out which chips are being supported by your BIOS.

There is NOT a lot of documentation in regards to Cpu support on this laptop. Google, gives like 2 links.

So what I did, was look up the chipset.

So it's either Socket M or Socket P.

This is as close as I can get you to any cpu support aside what you have in there.

You would purchase something of the same wattage to be closer to having a working upgrade.
