I inherited an i5 4690k on an MSI Z97 PC Mate motherboard. I gave it to my son to game on. I’m not too familiar with overclocking limits on the old Hastwell parts. It also has a 240mm AIO on it.

I got 4.5 GHz at 1.22v Prime95 small fft stable. Is that fine or is that too much voltage for either the chip or the motherboard?

1.22v is fine. Safe.

Unless u go crazy , voltage doesnt kill, heat does.

Anything under 1.4v is 'safe' so long as u keep temps under control and ofc the higher u go the better your motherboard VRMs need cooling.

Since the MSi PC mate MB is low end i wouldnt go crazy with voltage.

Thanks. The VRM temps do not report accurately in HW Monitor unfortunately. I’m going to leave it at 1.22v, CPU temps are fine. Even hitting it with Prime 95, temps only hit 72C. The VRM heat sink got hot, but still touchable (no readout). I’m sure while he plays his Lego games, won’t break a sweat then.

He has a pretty sweet setup for a 7 year old:

i5 4690k

gtx 1660s

16GB ram

1TB ssd

1080p 144Hz Monitor
