Help with GPU usage issue.

DrDAD

Good evening ladies and gents, as follows is my pc, and below my issue

Ryzen 5 3600 locked 4.2ghz CPU

16gb DDR4 Corsair Vengeance 3600mhz (dual) RAM

Corsair H75i 120mm Cooler

MSi B450 Gaming Pro Carbon Max Wifi Mobo

EVGA 2070 XC GPU

600w AeroCool Bronze 80+ PSU

Sabrent Rocket 500gb NVME M.2 NAND Drive

and several SSD's

My issue is with my GPU, during ANY game, The Divsion 2, Destiny 2, Battlefront 2, Borderlands 3, Doom Eternal, GTA V, My GPU is running at 100% which is fine, however my VRAM usage is only on 40%

on a game like The Division 2 ill have ultra DX12 with RT, but if i disable DX12 and lower to High no RT it remains at 100% GPU usage and 40% VRAM.

im using GPU-Z, CPU-Z, HWMonitor and Windows internal monitor.

its never overheated, but sometimes my games will close unexpectedly however thats not really unusual for the games i play like Cyberpunk, The Division and AC: Odyssey.

Any tips or confirmation this is normal would be great, i have contemplated changing the thermal paste however i dont want to open it for no reason.

thank you in advance.

TL;DR - GPU usage too high, help!!!

Yeah that's totally fine. I'd be concerned about crashing games, but if they tend to do that for everyone like you implied (I don't play those myself), then not much to do there.

Not maxing out the VRAM is good, otherwise if you went over 100% you'd see horrible stuttering. 100% GPU usage is excellent, it means you aren't leaving any performance on the table, you're getting the full value out of your card. That's to be celebrated!

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

This is exactly what i was assuming but this is the first time ive had more GPU than game! thank you for your feedback, i will see if anyone plays those games and has a solution!

Keep in mind RTX relies Tensor cores, not Vram. This could be why your Vram is low usage but GPU is high. Try turning RTX off and seeing if your fps and vram usage go up.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

one other thing to note is the VRAM usage metric isn't very accurate, it more reflects how much VRAM your applications are reserving. some games (IIRC call of duty games are notorious for this) reserve way more than needed, so they'll show usage far higher than they actually need to operate. so don't pay much attention to that 40% figure. if you hit 100% AND notice poor performance when that happens, then you can be concerned

I play Divison 2, and what you are describing seems normal to me there.

Unless you are limiting FPS (e.g. FPS cap say set to 60 FPS), the GPU won't lower usage.

It is trying out blast out as much FPS as possible, regardless of the graphics settings.

You WANT GPU usage to be at / close to 100%.

The GPU will use as much GPU VRM as it needs.

I haven't monitored GPU VRAM usage...but I can check it sometime tonight... or something, and give you an update.

This brings the question, what resolution are you gaming at ?

Also, what is your CPU usage % sitting at?

Hey Fellow Div 😉 im gaming at 1440p on a 32 inch QHD monitor, my CPU sits at around 45% but spikes and dips and sits at around 55c full load

How do you find crashes on uPlay / The Division 2, since my 1660/1080 and now 2070 it seems prevelant so im assuming its a 'perk' of the game!!!!

Sorry, I completed the thought in my head, but not here. Turn graphics settings up. That should load the VRAM harder.

1440p...GPU usage would be pretty high.

That seems pretty good CPU usage and temperature wise.

The crashes, I think got a little worse in the over Christmas / New Years.

I remember at the end boss of a Legendary mission, and 2 / 4 (including myself) just crashed mid-fight.

It happens during random times...

At least the uPlay chat is working for me again (instead of just loading forever) ... after like 1+ year...

I think Kestrel (for manhunt) is still using some next level SHD technology ... teleporting through walls and floors, generating seizure level holograms oh himself 🤣

sounds about right, but its pretty stable compared to a lot of other games, i lost a Eagle Bearer to a whole team crash wipe and i havent had or found one since.

Oh crap... I am sorry for your loss sir....

Well, you can beat the raid 5x to open the cache box at the end to get it 👀
