Need help!!

Go to solution Solved by Chickensen,

I just started streaming today on twitch using obs. It was fine for about the first half hour until my 2 monitors went black, and my pc fans ramped up (I think it was only my gpu fans, but it could have been the case fans as well). I let it run for a couple minutes hoping for it to go back to normal, but just ended up shutting off my pc. Tried again, lasted for about 5 minutes then the same thing happened. I was playing simple games like rocket league and Minecraft, so I wouldn’t think too much pc power would be needed. What’s the problem and what can I do to fix it?

pc specs:

cpu- ryzen 5 3600

gpu- gtx 1070ti

ram- 16gb ddr4

ssd- 1tb Samsung 970
cpu cooler- nzxt kraken x62

case- nzxt h510i

Firstly, you probably should have posted this in the "Troubleshooting" forum.

Secondly: could be so many things. Given it's running at all, I'm going to assume for now that it isn't driver related. But a couple of questions to start:

  • What's your power supply? Both capacity and brand.
  • What sort of temperatures are your CPU and GPU sitting at? It could be that you're simply overheating your system for whatever reason. You can use hwmonitor to find these.
  • How long have you had the system?

Sorry, I’m new to this site and didn’t see that forum haha. My psu is a Corsair CX650M. Last I checked my cpu temp was sitting around 60° and gpu was around 60-70°. My gpu is a little over 2 years old and my cpu and pretty much everything else are about a year old.

Not to worry, I'm sure a helpful mod will move this post over soon enough.

That's not a bad PSU, tier B/C so could be better but should be perfectly adequate for this system. I wouldn't expect there to be any problems with the system given the age, although I assume that the 1070ti wasn't new when you got it?

If you could check your temps now that would be great. One of the posibilties I can immediately think of is that your water cooler's pump has died, which might suddenly cause your PC to start overheating (and therefore start crashing). This would also explain the shorter period of time before it crashed the second time, due to the heat already in the system.

After letting my pc sit idle for a couple minutes my cpu temp is at 35-45° and my gpu is at 47-52°. I see how a dead pump would be the problem, but on nzxt cam I can see the pump is at 2115 rpm, and when I start my pc, I can hear the pump spinning up for a second, so I think the pump is working properly.

Hmm, very odd. Definitely sounds like it's all still working fine then.

What we could try is to see if we can determine whether the fault is hardware based or software based. If you have a spare hard drive/ssd sitting around, you could try taking out all drives from your system and installing Windows on your spare. This way you have a fresh install without losing your data, so you can then install minecraft and play for a while, to see if it happens again. If it doesn't, then you know that a windows reinstall will fix whatever issue you're having. If it does, then we know that we definitely have a hardware problem.

If you don't have a spare hard drive around, you can create a bootable Ubuntu USB stick which you could use to do this instead, provided you own a USB drive. Just create the drive and make sure you pick it from your motherboard's boot menu. You should then be able to install minecraft for ubuntu onto this stick and try the test this way.

I don’t have any spare hard drives or usb sticks that I can use (that I know of). There weren’t any problems until I started streaming though. I could run any game for any amount of time without any problems, but when I started streaming with obs, that’s when the problems started. Even right now after playing some games for a while it’s ok.
Edit: I just checked my temps after playing a couple games of apex, my cpu temp was normal, around 65°, but my gpu temp was 702°. I instantly shut off my pc because I don’t know what’s happening. I’m feeling the backplate of the gpu and it seems just as hot as it normally would be after some games. Idk if it’s a glitch with nzxt cam or if something is seriously wrong with my gpu

Ok, in which case my advice would be "don't do that then".

In all seriousness, make sure you've installed all your Windows and Nvidia driver updates. Sounds like obs might be the instigator, but who knows if its the root cause. You could even try a full reinstall of your Nvidia drivers using DDU.

I’ll try a full reinstall of my drivers and if that doesn’t work I guess I’ll just stop using obs. Thank you for your help and fast replies, it is much appreciated.
