First PC build ram or motherboard issue

Hey everyone,

 

I helped my son with his first pc build

 

specs
MSI B450 Tomahawk

Team T-Force Delta 16gb DDR-4 2x8gb

Rayzen 5 3600

MSI gtx 1660 super

EVGA BQ 600 w

 

We installed the ram in slots 2 and 4 per the diagram on the motherboard.  When both sticks are installed the DRAM light on the motherboard stay's lit and the pc wont turn on or post.  If i remove the stick located in slot 4 the pc boots fine, i have tried to swap the stick around and it didn't matter.  I can put either stick into slot 2 and the pc is fine

 

Things i have done

Updated the BIOS

re seated the memory (numerous times)

re seated cpu

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Bad MOBO Most likely

Try a new one if you can!

If you still have a warranty take it back and get a new one.

(Could be the CPU though)

(I'm assuming you made sure each ram stick works)

 

Most MOBO companies are pretty good about faulty units.

I agree that this is most likely a motherboard problem, but for the sake of being thorough, try a single stick of RAM in every slot and report back the results.

 

Also try a stick in slots 1 & 3. The results of this can be useful for troubleshooting purposes even if it is not a recommended configuration.

Single RAM test
slot 1 - message ram was in the wrong slot but it still booted
slot 2 - booted fine
slot 3 - DRAM light no boot

slot 4 - DRAM light no boot

I have another question
If the MOBO is bad, which seems likely. Should I

1. Reach out to B&H where it was purchased on 1-9-2021, my son threw away the anti static bag and inside cardboard piece.  I do have original box and paper work

 

2. Reach directly to MSI for a replacement

Hmmm. That's not super conclusive. Either your mobo has two bad dimm slots, or your CPU IMC's channel B is bad. It's still most likely the motherboard, so you should do this:

As long as you are still in the returns window, this is always the easier and faster method. Let the retailer deal with MSI for you.  

 

When you get the new motherboard, if the problem persists, then you'll have to look into replacing the CPU, but hopefully it's the motherboard at issue.
