Is this normal?

YaboiArthur

Hey guys,

A quick question. I sent my motherboard in for RMA because it made a high pitched noise whenever power would be directed to it. However they found that nothing was wrong with it so they sent it back to me. I might just be pretty sensitive to high pitched noises as they make me feel sick and my start ringing after a while. Could you guys check the video whether or not the sound is normal or not. i've had the motherboard for about a month now. It's a b450 steel legend from asrock. I have tried using a different power supply and components. But the sound also occurs when it's just the motherboard that is connected to the 24 pin. Note that the sound is a lot louder than what the camera picks up. I can pretty hear it through my entire room.

its not for say normal, but its probably okay.

no different than coil whine from a psu or gpu, although the motherboard's whine is a lot more high pitched than one would expect.
but its definitely something that other people have encountered before

Do you think there is a solution to remove the sound or is it just bad luck with the motherboard?

I can't even hear anything, even at almost 100% sound output.... granted it might be my old grandpa ears 🤣

Seriously though, I too am sensitive to sounds, some I can overcome with repetition so I get used to it, and others I can't live with. My newest ESXi server lab build was troublesome for a week or 2 until I got used to it, now it doesn't bother me at all. And I sit only about a foot or so away from it when at my desktop, and it's in my bedroom... it's not LOUD at all, just wasn't used to the sound (my desktop is very quiet by design).

I would either:-

  1. Try to get used to it.
  2. Block out the noise with headphones or something.
  3. Return it to the retailer if you can for a refund and get a different one, if that's not an option maybe sell it on ebay (say that it might have slight whine to it), and take the slight loss in money for peace of mind.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

just like with gpu coil whine it just happens, although the more power the gpu draws the louder the sound will be. im sure you can imagine the coil whine on a gpu pulling 150% of its max power draw, although its a LOT lower pitch and the fans drown out the sound anyway, but my headset does pick up a static sound, it becomes more noticeable the more the gpu pulls
