CPU Upgrade

Go to solution Solved by Hairless Monkey,

You could go cheaper on the motherboard if you wanted to, but it's a good board and within your budget. The trick will be getting your hands on a 5600X.

Hi All

I'm currently looking to only upgrade my CPU after having it for almost 5 years now.

My current specs are a:

  1. Gigabyte GA Z170-HD3 Motherboard
  2. Intel Core I7-6700 3.40 GHz Processor CM8066201920103
  3. GeForce® RTX 2060 SUPER™ WINDFORCE OC 8G
  4. Team T-Force Delta RGB Series 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz Memory
  5. Samsung 860EVO 500G SSD Drive
  6. 2 x 144 Hz 24.5inch Acer monitor

I recently upgraded my SSD and graphics card as well as my peripherals and I'm looking to play some AAA games like Witcher 3 and more and found that my CPU is starting to bottleneck with massive screen tear and drop in frame rate.

Can y'all recommend any decent CPU's for me to upgrade? I'm anticipating that I'll likely have to swap out my motherboard too.

Regarding budget, anywhere between $300 to $800 AUD is fine so long as it is future proof and gives solid performance for its price.

Preferably given all the talk about AMD, I'd like an AMD recommendation. However, I'm still a noob when it comes to getting the best match and value for PC builds.

Cheers,

Pat

Just as an aside, I've been dealing with massive frame rate drop in CS:GO down to 40 to 80 FPS which is nowhere near the 144 fps that i expect from my current set up.

Sell your cpu and Mobo and purchase ryzen 5 5600x and b550 board.

Those bottleneck calculators are horrible and are very inaccurate.

like posters above said, sell your CPU and MOBO for around 225, and then get a 5600X and B550 with new RAM

geometry is hard
b550 > x570

That calculator is a load of bs. But still you should not be having any of those issues as a 6700 is more than plenty for those games and is a totally fine cpu to this day. How old is your windows install? Might just be old windows syndrome at work here.

That and everything is beyond overpriced or just not available right now.

The RAM looks suitable, actually. 3200Mhz is fine.

Probably, I'm running Microsoft Windows 10 Pro version 10.0.19042 Build 19042. So it should be able to run it smoothly. I'll keep an eye out for sales or stock availability early 2021.

Is it still the original windows 10 install from 5 years ago (as in you installed it but never reinstalled it from scratch) if so a simple full windows reinstall form a usb (not the built in reset it doesn't work as well or it simply doesn't work) will fix the issue most likely.

I mean I have a 6700hq with 970m laptop and that thing played the witcher like a champ on medium settings 1080p. My little brother did not have any issues with his 2600k and rx590 system for any new games and always had at the very least a rock solid 60fps. It broke a month ago due to spiders but other than that it would have kept on going for a good while. Cs:go went over 100fps without a hitch too.
