Hello,

I have a i7-8700k with a Z390 Phantom Gaming 4-IB motherboard and have been wondering about my temps for a while now. I haven’t really started paying close attention to my CPU temps until around a month ago and noticed they were hot. My friends both have AMD CPU’s and they say they run in the 50c-60c range while gaming. I am running 80c on most games and get to a steady 90c while playing Battlefield 1. I understand that different CPUs run at different temperatures but it still seems very hot. My GPU temps are fine so I don’t think it’s the room temperature or anything. I have a IBuyPower water cooler but I couldn’t find the exact model as I have a prebuilt. I already replaced my thermal paste and took out and put back in the cooling system again with not really any change in CPU temps. I have also set the fans to full speed with not much change. I have researched for the past 3 days and keep seeing different messages about the i7-8700k like people are getting only to 75c under max stress and others are getting closer to what I get in temperature. What I want answered simply is whether or not It would be in my better interest to get a new cooler like an Noctua NH-D15 air cooler or whether those temps are normal for my CPU. I just don’t want to go and spend $90 for something that might not even change much, or spend money on something that doesn’t need to be changed at all.

I’m not whiling to do any delidding because I’m still a noob when it comes to the PC building scene let alone taking apart my CPU. I don’t have any type of money to replace something if I mess up.

I just want to know if getting a different cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 would do me any good or if my temps are really anything I should even worry about.

An NH-D15 is pretty overkill unless you plan to crank a pretty extreme overclock.

An NH-U12S will do just fine, I even have the lowly Cooler master Hyper 212 on my CPU and it's overclocking just fine.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

if you reach 90 in games, there could be spike loads u don't foresee hitting 100C, it's "ok" as long as they are not sustained loads, but if you are running stock (was it 4.3?) try manually setting the voltage around 1.2v, then if temps still suck, consider new cooler.

Set all core to 47 in bios and vCote to manual at 1.2

retest and report back

I know its been a few days but I tried what you said and nothing. I ended up getting the Noctua NH-D15 and it works incredibly well, and just fits in my case. I was getting 48c-52c idle before and I'm only getting 25c now. Also I was getting 90c while playing Battlefield 1 before and I'm only getting 50c-55c now. Extremely impressed with this cooler, and I just hope it last.
