Current build:

MSI X99A SLI

I7-5820k

GTX 960

Looking to upgrade my GPU, thinking I want to go with a 2080 or 3080...new to the PC world so not sure if I’m on the right track

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

The 3080 on that CPU is a bit of a stretch. You would not be able to fully utilize it's potential. Maybe a 3060 Ti instead, it costs less than a 2080 and is about equal to a 2080 Super. Really depends on what you can actually find in stock.

Right now the GPU market is just a caos.

No stock

High as hell prices.

With that CPU i would reccomend you a 3060Ti (or a potential 3060).

however in my honest opinion right now its not the best moment to upgrade a GPU. It would cost you a lot of money and a lot of effort to find a good deal.

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 @ 4.4GHz 1.2v / GPU: MSI Radeon RX 5700 Mech OC GP (5700XT Bios) @ 2GHz / MB: Asus ROG Strix B450-F / RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL16 / CASE: MSI MAG Vampiric 010X

First of all what is your psu? (model name is important the rest not). What resolution, framerate, settings and games are you wishing to play?

I will have to check that when I get home. Forgot what that was. I’m mostly playing first person shooters (apex, warzone, etc). My current GPU is maxed out trying to play warzone. Getting 40-50 frames per second with stuttering and skipping head (almost like it’s fast forwarding).

Yeah I’m finding that out while looking around. The 3080 I could find locally and the 2080 I did find online. I’ll look into the 3060ti. Thanks

Yeah I’m finding it’s probably not the best time, but current gpu is killing me with low fps, stuttering, skipping 😂. I do have a friend with a used 3080 as he has a 3090 now. So that was an option.

Until the psu is known I can't recommend anything. Also you got 16gb of ram? That is also basically a requirement for games now especially those not well optimized cod games.

I’m running 32gb of ram. I will check the psu when I get home from work

That would be a huge bottleneck with 3080. Mine is AMD Ryzen 5 5600x and a GTX 970. But thats also bottleneck. Go ahead and get a 3060 or 3060Ti :)

Honestly I don’t know where to start with what resolution I want to play at? I’m still new to this haha sorry. I’m playing right now on the lowest settings possible. Everything set to low/very low for textures, etc. I get around 50-60 fps now. It’s just the stuttering is killing me

Well what monitors are you using?

1080p? or 1440p? 4k?

Always best to game at native resolution....

The 3060ti will be good at 1080p and do fine for most things at 1440p

At 1080p you might get CPU bottlenecked in some E-sports titles or some very CPU heavy RTS and TBS stuff. But even then you should pull comfortably more than 60FPS

Im using a 1080p monitor now. I’m not too concerned with trying to get 4K out for this set up as I assume that’d be a stretch. I don’t think I’ll be playing any RTS or TBS games.  But I’ll start the long search for a 3060 I guess haha

Actually the 3060ti is not that hard to get. They are overpriced......

But unlike the 3080 you can actually find them in stock.
