Going to the U.S., minimum GPU setup?

TaxxiDriver

Hello, everyone. I am going to the U.S. in a week, and I have to build a new machine. The problem is obviously that I cannot find a reasonably priced GPU at the moment; my current machine is using RX580 and I have found that it is actually more expensive after 2 years I have bought one. Therefore, I have decided to build a PC with a minimum GPU and purchase a decent one after the GPU shortage is resolved.

Here is the spec of my current machine:

  • Ryzen 2600X

  • RX580

  • 16GB 3000MHz (maybe 3200 not sure)

  • No RGB but good case (fractal) and Noctua fans :)

  • Dual Monitor, Free-Sync 75hz 1080p

Here is my budgets & etc:

  • Budget & Max Setup: Around $200 on CPU, similar with my previous machine except GPU. I am still not sure what I should do about the GPU part.
  • Country: U.S.
  • Purpose: Gaming, some statistical computation etc.

I do play some modern games (Quake Champions atm) but I am wiling to play such games in low settings for now. For my needs of the GPU power, RX580 is still mighty fine with what I am doing with the machine for the most part.

Can you guys recommend me some setups that will suit my needs? I am willing to spend about $200 on CPU but I am not sure what would be the most efficient solution for the GPU. I was thinking of purchasing a used GPU but due to cryptomining I am not sure how I can find a good used GPU that had not been exploited in cryptomining. The problem is even more annoying since the higher Ryzen CPUs do not have integrated GPUs. What would you do in my situation?

I will answer you anything that can help you. Thank you for your help.

What's your budget for all components?

and what is your motherboard?

I really should have specified my budget, but rather than the cost, I would say I am fine with my previous settings (it is listed in my signature) except that I am willing to upgrade the CPU.

As for the motherboard, I am not upgrading since I have to build a new machine, and I haven't decided on particular motherboard yet. Anything that is ATX size with moderate level mb I guess? (nothing fancy is needed). I guess Ryzen is the CPU to choose even with my settings? I just want to hear some inputs since I do not know much about the current builds yet.

For the CPU I would say the R 5 3600 If you can find one ,for the ram 3200mhz it will work better ,for the motherboard b450 for and for GPU GTX 1660 super or something higher but if you are really on budget for GPU take the RX 590 but with good cooling.

Thank you for your reply! Does B450 still work with Ryzen 3600? Will it work with the next gen Ryzen CPU as well? The reason I am asking this is because if the cost difference is not huge I think it might be better to buy a newer mb (B450 is the current one btw).

About the GPU, I guess I will even stick with RX570 or something... the cost is too high atm. I am not sure whether I will be able to find RX590; at least on Amazon I cannot find atm.

[Edited] Maybe should I look for a used GPU?

Thanks! Indeed I think I will be okay with Ryzen 2600 but some of the programs I run (Python or even emacs) might benefit a lot from CPU, so I am thinking of upgrading it and buy a good GPU later.

Works with everything with the exception of the brand new Ryzen 5xxx series CPU's atm.

You'll get alot of use out of the 2600x in the mean time, I was planning on upgrading to a 3700x some time after the new year but as long as im getting over 100fps im not to bothered.

Also could be worth looking into something like a 120hz monitor just to make things alttle smoother but thats also just preference.

I agree with you. Since I play retro games mostly, I think 2600x will be more than enough for me as well. Maybe I will buy RX580 one more time idk...

That's a very good point, actually. I really want to try anything higher than 75hz. Any recommendation for monitors? I want to check some of them.

Yes it sill works well or you can buy a b550 if you wanna upgrade in the future for the new gen of ryzen and its way better than b450.

For GPU its hard lol maybe the rx 580 or the gtx1650 super .

If you aren't really that interested in playing like all the modern day FPS heavy games I don't really see a huge need to spend money when not needed.

There are alot out there if you just find something within your respective price range. Most monitors will be a good choice and don't "really" matter to much until you start needing extra features like Freesync/G-Sync then all of those extra things matter but even a basic 120/144hz monitor will serve you well.

Yeah, if only higher-end Ryzen CPU had integrated GPU... idk maybe I will even go lower than RX580 but not sure how low I should be able to fall lol
