Hi all, I picked up a Strix 3080 a few weeks ago, and ever since, my performance has been subpar

I've been averaging 80-100fps in warzone at 1440p on every setting (low-ultra) when benchmarks online with the exact same hardware as me have been averaging 150-200. My temps are also sitting at 60-68 degrees when I game and my CPU does not exceed 75 degrees. Moreover, I seemed to have gotten nearly the exact same performance with my EVGA 2080ti prior to the upgrade. I have done some research online and a select few individuals have been facing the same issues as me. At this point, I am thinking it may be best to submit an RMA ticket with ASUS. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Here's a benchmark of my system.

Specs:

  • Strix 3080
  • Asus ROG Maximus x Code
  • Intel i7-8700k
  • 32 GB Ram
  • Asus Rog 750W PSU (maybe this is the problem?)
  • Lian Li o11 Dyanmic (9 Case fans, so airflow shouldn't be an issue).

Solutions I have tried:

  • I have 3 8 pin PCI-e connectors going into the GPU
  • I’ve tried changing my power settings to maximum performance and the problem persist
  • I've done a DDU
  • Changed RAM profiles to XMP in Bios
  • Updated BIOS
  • Updated Windows
  • Updated to the latest GeForce drivers
  • I am running my games on an m.2 SSD and an internal SSD; so hard-drives are not the issue.

Clean your system. Reset BIOS to defaults. Enable XMP. Remove unneccesary start-up/background programs. Ensure at least "balanced" power mode set.

If the OS was installed on a previous motherboard, consider doing a fresh install of the OS.

Thank you, I will give this a try.

Enabling xmp will do nothing for you because you have a gpu problem. What will help is downloading msi afterburner and monitor what clock speeds you get so we can diagnose your issue better

Can you check what frequency your 8700k is running at while gaming?

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

userbenchmark is literally useless when trying to troubleshoot / diagnose anything, I think the sooner you'll learn this the better...

Especially since it's still in the green... it's not actually performing bad, even if we were to take this known to be useless website seriously ...

I have Afterburner installed, should I screenshot the clock speed graph or is there a way to provide that information in a more digestible manner.

your clock speeds seem normal.

🤷🏼

generally this means cpu bottleneck so you should probably check that *all cores / threads*...

If you go off green/red, clearly you're not using it properly as a tool. UBM provides fine information regarding how his system is performing relative to other 8700K's (There is issues comparing chip-chip, but that's a separate problem). At the 7th percentile, clearly something is wrong with his OS/configuration.

And that's where almost anyone will disagree... their tests are lousy and give no useful information whatsoever...

4.29GHz.

I should mention that the GPU also gets very hot, very quickly, even though I have an o11 dynamic with 9 case fans... my 2080ti did not have this problem. I've opened up an RMA ticket with ASUS, its likely I got a faulty GPU.

But this issue was not present with my 2080ti in which I was pushing 120-140 frames @1440P... I'm suspecting the problem is a faulty graphics card.

I mean yeah... it should perform better... kinda concerning it runs that hot also... maybe faulty, maybe just not adequate airflow, not sure (you definitely don't need 11 fans, generally) 2 or 3 intake, 1 exhaust is generally fine...

Well you should also check all core *usage*, it *definitely* sounds like cpu bottleneck (issue you obviously didn't have with your old card)

so, while you can RMA the card, I'm not sure it'll actually help.

really not sure about the temps ("could" be faulty cooling on the gpu, yeah...) but still, if your cpu bottlenecks, it'll do it on *any* 3080...

All of my cores are operating at 100% during benchmarks/gaming and clock in at a max of 4695MHz.

GPU-Z is also showing that I am being performance capped by 'vRel' and 'Pwr', others have stated the issue was fixed with an 850W or above PSU swap.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As for the RMA, a customer support rep told me that I may have received a "used" card put in a "new" box by Newegg based off of the issues I've told them I'm having - potentially a repeat issue that their aware of considering the fiasco Newegg was tied up in like shipping EVGA 3080's without any boxes.

ok but you need to check with the game your playing (I already know it's one that's not optimized for multi core usage, you just have to check the usage... if there's at least 1 core / thread close to 100 that *is* your issue, a classic cpu bottleneck)

CPU usage is hitting in the 95-100 range when gaming, typically staying at 99/100.

Nonetheless, unless there's a problem with my CPU, other benchmarkers utilizing an 8700k haven't shown performance as low as mine?

Apologies if I'm not really understanding what you're getting at - I'm not too familiar with trouble shooting.

this is exactly what I'm talking about, your gpu is most likely fine...

your cpu is not. you don't ever want it hitting 100 or even close while gaming as it means it limits your gpus ability to render frames...

simply put :

cpu gives instructions to gpu to render frames

if cpu is at 100 but gpu isn't the gpu is "bottlenecked" ...

tldr: you don't ever want to hit 100% CPU usage while gaming (its different for benchmarks as they're designed to use as much cpu as possible, so kinda irrelevant for a gaming scenario)

real tldr: you need a new cpu.

Is the issue of my CPU bottlenecking my card due to the CPU dying? Because other benchmarkers with the exact same build as me don't have this issue and see much higher FPS than I in most games.

good question, idk that. but you could test cpu with something like cinebench, then compare it with similar / same cpus online...

you can also run 3dmark Timespy (free demo on Steam) as it also has a cpu test and you can directly compare to *same* hardware afterwards.
