Hi all,

I'm pretty sure I've got this right, but hoping someone can confirm for me please.

I have a case with 4 x 3pin fans and a motherboard with 2 chassis fan connectors (1 x 4pin and 1 x 3 pin).  I want to set things up so that only 2 of the fans are spinning normally (say 600rpm) to keep things quiet, but the other 2 kick in when I start gaming (ie - all four at 1000rpm or so).  I'll be setting appropriate fan curves in the BIOS.  I just need to know if these 2 cables will be suitable to do that as I'm a bit confused by the missing pin on some connectors -

Thanks 🤓

You can connect a 3 pin fan to a 4 pin PWM header if that's your question.

With 3 pin fans, you control the voltage, and minimum is 5V I believe, so you won't be able to turn two fans off and make them spin when under load.

Also, depending on your hardware, you could probably get away with two fans (albeit possibly needing them to spin faster). Usually one fan for intake and one for exhaust is enough if you're worried about it being noisy.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don't actually know anything.

Recommendations: Lian Li 205m (sleek, pretty decent airflow for a non-mesh front panel and cheap), i5-10400f (Ryzen 5 3600 performance, 20% cheaper), Arctic P14 PWM fans, Logitech g305.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  I've tested it out on my motherboard by hooking up the rear fan to one of the motherboard headers and setting a curve in the BIOS for 0% rpm at 50deg and 50% rpm at 60deg.  After a restart, the fan does stop spinning and only starts up when the temp hits 60deg, so I don't know if I have a newer board or something, but it does work. 😎

I'll have to test the other header to make sure it does the same, but assuming it does, the question still stands: are those splitter cables in the link above okay to do what I mentioned?

Thanks.

Also, follow up heat related question if I may.  My idle temps are CPU at ~45deg and GPU at ~35deg.  Under load (playing cyberpunk on high settings at 1080p), I get CPU at ~65-70deg and GPU at ~60-65deg.  Does that sound okay?

Specs are:

ASRock B450M Pro4-F mobo

Ryzen 2600

16GB 3000mhz RAM

5600XT gfx

Fractal 650w gold PSU

Fine and normal temps.
