So i use my personal PC to work on via a remote session. So during my down time i play gpu intensive games. All of a sudden after finishing playing a game, pc crashes. Restart it, its fine, then launch a game and crashes again. This time the PC doesn't turn on. I'll list the steps and the outcomes of my early diagnostics and steps

  • Unplug all peripherials - No Boot

  • Unplug GPU and remove GPU - PC Boots

  • Plug Display Cable into MOBO - Nothing on Display

  • Put GPU in PCI-E Slot but not plug in PSU Cables into it - PC Boots + GPU Turns On

  • Plug Display Cable into GPU - Display comes on asking to plug power cables into GPU

  • Plug GPU power Cables back in - No Boot

Now i'm assuming its more likely down to faulty VGA psu cable so i have ordered a new one however this does mean i am missing a day of work and i need to be back up and running by monday. Are there any diagnostics or issues i'm missing? Could my GPU just be Dead?

I Purchased a new GPU power cable, didn't work. However weirdly because my gpu require 8 pin & 6 pin power cables i tried plugging only the 6 pin and it booted but not when the 8 pin is plugged in together or on its own.

Specs:

ryzen 5 3600

16gb Ram

980ti

550W Bronze PSU

500gb m.2

500gb ssd

Well it is very unlikely to be the cable itself. Probably the PSU that is at fault here or the graphics card. Any debug error code on the pc lighting up, beeps? Not sure what you need to do for work stuff but I'd get a no nonsense thinkpad laptop as a backup solution, maybe a used one. Maybe try a different GPU as well as replacing the power supply. If the system does nothing and stays off, your PSU is definitely gone. When replacing it, get a 80+ Gold rated or better unit, also with some more Power. 550W on a 980 ti is not a good idea (usually you would get a 750 watt unit or better with that card).

As far as I understand

when you plug your graphics card without the power cables, it just recieves the standard 75W of power that allows the GPU to show you that message warning that you have to plug your GPU cables.

When you connect those cables it tries to suck the power through them, but it cant.

So it can be:

GPU Power plugs broken

PSU PCI-E cable broken

PSU failing to deliver any power through those cables.

If you have any friend that is willing to let you put your GPU in his PC to see if it works, it would narrow the problem to the PSU.

I dont think its the gpu, but it could have the power connector broken somehow.

Just try to put the gpu into another pc, from a friend, from a family member, and check if it works. If it works its the PSU, if it doesnt, its the GPU.

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 @ 4.4GHz 1.2v / GPU: MSI Radeon RX 5700 Mech OC GP (5700XT Bios) @ 2GHz / MB: Asus ROG Strix B450-F / RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL16 / CASE: MSI MAG Vampiric 010X

Thanks! I've moved country so don't know anyone here to test, annoyingly back home i have a second rig all together! If the GPU was broken would it show that message that it can't draw power? My thoughts were aswell its either as you said a broken power pin in the gpu or PSU not being beefy enough, However i've had this pc now since April and no issues

Nothing :/ and because i naively got a cpu withouth an iGPU can't use it at all. I'm considering buying a new psu, cheapest option of them. However the thought of having to recable it is driving me nuts. I've had this PC since April so surprised this has only happened now.
