I am planning on doing a server build to host game servers etc. Now i have not done a server build before and i just have some general questions about the hardware.

I picked out the Xeon E3-1240v3 Processor but im stuck on motherboards. They seem to all be the same. I dont know anything about the northbrige or what i should get on this thing. Also what the hell would i need pci express slots for? I dont plan on doing any work on this i will most likely run remote access and install linux with centos.

I am not going with expensive parts for this thing just standard that would be good for game servers.

So my main question is will i need PCI-E Slots where i will be accessing this virtually. I dont need video cards or anything. So what would you need them for, a usb 3.0 pci card? I dont anyways let me know thanks in advance!

What kind of servers are you running?

If you don't need any special features, literally any 1150 motherboard will do.

Pci-e slots can be for video cards or any expansion cards, etc. You don't need to use them if you don't want to. However, do realize that the cpu you chose does not have integrated graphics.
