Wrong RAM Frequency

Hello everyone!

First of all, let me congratulate LinusTechTips.com for all their work and specially this Toubleshooting part in the forum. Amazing help!!! (cheers for Slick!)

I'm not at total loss in computer, but this is frustating me.

I have a Asus P7H55-M motherboard with the lastest BIOS update (1302).
It's using an Intel i5 750 @ 2,68GHz
For RAM I'm using 3x2GB Corsair Dominator GT kit and they are in the slots 2, 3 and 4.

So, my problem is that, no matter what I do, the RAM allways runs at 1666MHz.

I attached some CPU-Z info that may help.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

Thank you in advance!!

Duarte

"To reach DDR3 2200 MHz, you are required to use with Intel Core i7/Core i5 CPU without iGPU and install a discrete graphics card. When using Intel Core i5/Core i3/ Pentium CPU with iGPU, the maximum memory speed supported is 1600+ MHz"

Quote from their Memory Specifications for your motherboard model number.

I don't know if that helps.

simply enabling xmp profile in the bios should set it to 1866mhz but i dont know why it would work

Go into your bios and manually enter your memory timings, speed and voltage if you haven't already.

Your memory is rated for 1866 anyway so i don't see the need to go less, but if you're trying to overclock it, i wouldn't expect it could achieve much.

This may be why it's not letting you change things, but you have an a tri-channel memory kit in a dual channel board.

i know this is gonna sound counter intuitive but, you would get more performance from your system by turning the ram down to 1333 and using the lower latency timings. reason being the motherboard supports faster ram but the cpu doesn't. it supports ddr3 1333 max.

although the motherboards can handle that ram speed it has no impact on the overall system performance 1s you go faster than what the cpu natively supports.

end result is, the the only place you will see any difference is benchmarks, in the real world it will have zero impact on gaming or productivity.

yes i know, i hear you with faster means better... not always its pointless having a 200mph car in a country that has a 50mph speed limit (generally its a waste of money even if occasionally you can break a few laws).

if you can only go so fast then its better to do it more efficiently as that results in smoother performance. so limit the speed to 1333 and drop the latencies you will then see an actual performance increase of around 2% per cas you drop, than a perceived increase of 20% faster ram speed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey, i have the same problem.
I've seen the cpu's limit and for my cpu it is 2x1866mhz and that is what i have.
I bought 2x8gb 1866mhz dominator ram and the motherboard http://www.gigabyte.se/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3907#sp

can handle it. The cpu http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-FX-Series%20FX-4170%20FD4170FRW4KGU.html

can handle it.

So my question is, why is it the same levels as this guy posting this thread?

I know your mailbox...
