I’m having a problem where my pc will randomly shut off normally during loading or when I’m walking into a large area in a game. I think the power supply might be tripping or something because I’ll be playing a game then all of the sudden my pc will just click then it’s off. I have to flip the switch on the power supply to off then back on for it to power up again almost like I’m resetting it. I have recently upgraded to a 3080 FE and a Ryzen 5900x but kept my 750w power supply. I’m thinking it could be that the power supply just can’t keep up when my components boost and draw a large amount of power quickly and just shuts down. It also happens in games I wouldn’t exactly call demanding like phasmophobia, but this could be a optimization issue that causes my card to draw a lot of power maybe? I don’t really know, any thoughts to help me out tho?

What power supply do you have? That sounds to me like the power spikes on the 3080 tripping the PSU's overcurrent protection.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

I've seen similar issues on my 5800x with a 3090 but it happened even after I upgraded to 1000w. I doubt its your power draw. Do you have your CPU overclocked or are you using Precision based overdrive? PBO can push your CPU too hard sometimes and might need to be dialed back or have voltages increased

No theres no OC on my cpu and i dont use PBO. i think it may be the power supply because of the fact that in order to turn the pc back on I have to turn the psu's power switch off then back on if I dont do that the power button does nothing

Sorry, didn't notice previous comment. Do you have any OCs applied to your GPU?

No my GPU isnt Overclocked either

Yeah, I'd say its your overcurrent protection being tripped then. However, have you verified that you don't have any issues with something shorting before you go out and buy a new PSU? Might try reseating everything and checking for any mobo standoffs that don't match a corresponding hole, etc. If you still have issues, it could very well just be inadequate power..

Is it dangerous to keep playing on the pc until i replace it?

If its just too much power draw, then no, shouldn't really be much of an issue.
