Hey,

I've built a new PC today and stumbled upon an issue which I just can't resolve. Basically after booting the system it works fine for a while and at some point (time frame is fairly random, between using it for hours and once this happend just when i unlocked it after a boot) it just freezes (as in doesn't accept input, no blue screen, no error messages whatever was on the screen at the moment just stays there forever) and the only way to resume is a hard shutdown via holding the power button.

Since this issue seems to appear right when I start launching a game or anything graphics heavy (e.g. the Heaven benchmark, very reliable way to cause this issue after a few frames it freezes) I'd at first assumed the graphics card might be the issue, but this problem persists even with the GTX 1070 Ti from my old computer. This also happens when I don't run anything graphics-y just takes a while (or well in that one case I mentioned earlier just when I unlocked Windows)

Specs of the system (all newly bought hardware):

  • CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

  • GPU: GIGABYTE RTX 3080 Eagle OC 10G

  • Mainboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E

  • PSU: GIGABYTE GP-P850GM (850W)

  • RAM: D432GB 3600-16 Trident Z Neo K2 GSK

  • SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus

  • CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

  • OS Windows 10 Pro, newest version

Things I've tried so far:

  • Reinstalling Windows (one can hope, this also means this is a fresh system so I doubt the issue is anything software related)

  • Installing multiple driver versions (from the newest to a few older ones, every time with a full DDU uninstall)

  • Upgrading the Mainboard BIOS to v3002 (from v2802)

  • Switching out the GPU for a different one

  • Trying to use a different PCIe slot

  • Making sure everything is plugged in properly

  • Running Cinebench to stress the CPU (To see if this will cause the issue as well, "sadly" it didn't)

  • Switch out the RAM with a different one (another DDR4 from my old PC)

  • Trying out different RAM slots

  • Run "Windows memory diagnostic"

Since the issue doesn't seem to create any error messages whatsoever (at least I couldn't find any in the usual places, Reliability History or Event Viewer beyond "Windows didn't shut down correctly").

If anyone can give me a hint or something along those lines on what I could try next or what I should do I'd really appreciate it, I'm really at wit's end.

This program is useless, only one that is actually proper is memtest86

A hard lock is a sure sign of hardware failure. Are you running XMP on your RAM? If so, turn that off.

Good to know, Edit: memtest86 run through without issues.

Assuming that "Manual" (vs Auto and D.O.C.P.) is off, didn't work either sadly.

Ok, so RAM is good.

And you still have these issues when you switched out the video card?

Yes

How many sticks of RAM does your system have? I assume you've tried just one stick at a time and the issue persists?

Yes, also a completely different set.

Have you tried disabling some of those O.S services running in the background? They don't show up in task manager. Just type services in the start search bar, and carefully research each one before disabling it. I think this is what solved a few of my games constantly stuttering. Its a shot in the wind, but its worth a shot.

well then it's either mobo or psu... the usual culprits.

and it kinda very much sounds like psu...  (freezes under load)

and gigabyte. and only 850w...

I know this is an older thread but maybe op is still "listening".

Fairly sure its not related to the OS considering that its a fresh install

I'm still listening yeah. Hm I thought 850W is actually a bit overkill for that system. I'm trying to get a different one for testing but it seems like they're as hard to get as the new ryzen / gpus right now 😅 (at least here).

you can try underclocking the GPU about 200-300mhz... might just fix the issue, and if it does you know it's the PSU... and the good news is performance should still be really good with a 200-300mhz underclock...

You can also try under volting, same idea but should be more effective - more complicated though so it's better to try ~200mhz less core clock first...

Fresh install or not, that pile of shit Microsoft included with it is still there. Literally, disabling those services is the only thing that worked for me.
