I tried Hotspot Shield free version in OS X about a month ago and it was pretty sweet.  But I didn't really need a VPN at the time so I uninstalled it.

Yesterday I re-installed Hostpot Shield Free again in OS X.  But it had new limitations (can't change IP location in free version anymore) and it had add banners that weren't in the version I tried a month ago.  No big deal considering it is free.  But when I uninstalled it, the banners remained.

I had to do the following to cleanup (ElRojito's post):  https://discussions.apple.com/message/24321901#24321901

So, if you are an OS X Hotspot user and trying to uninstall the free version... there you go.  I can't recommend the free version of hotspot shield, at least not for OS X.  But like Linus said in recent WAN show, there aren't any good "free" VPN.   I'm sure the Elite is good else so many people here wouldn't be recommending it.  but the Free version seems hacked together.

Check out vpnbook.com it's an excellent server that uses the openvpn client. Go to the vpnbook site and check out their how to section vpnbook.com/howto I've been using it for a little while now to watch BBC iPlayer videos. It works like a charm. Give it a shot.

Tunnelbear is a good choice. It has a 500MB limit but you can tweet and get 1GB more each month.

First thing first, why do you want a VPN?

Who sent you?  Which government do you work for?

*Edit:

Anonymity/hide - or to have a secure tunnel.  To access services only available from certain locations, which I think is why most use them for.  Some use it for torrenting.  I think I read some use it for creating a tunnel from their school network to hide what websites they are visiting.  Not sure exactly of all the uses.

I don't really have a need for a third party VPN service.  I wanted to "experiment" with using it to have a better understanding what it is all about.

Up till then I've only used VPN for work, to create secure channel to the office network... for example, I'll VPN (using "Cisco AnyConnect" or "Juniper Network", etc) to corporate offices while I'm on the road or working from home.  I sometimes will VPN from my laptop or phone (using the VPN tools built into the OS) while I'm away from home to my home router/LAN. I can have a secure channel and work as if I'm in my home office.   TOTALLY different idea of VPN compared to what Hotspot shield, etc provides.  But I wanted to see what those were all about and tried them out.

If you want anonymity then you should definitely not use a VPN, especially not a free one.

If you want to access for example the US version of NetFlix then HotSpot Shield is probably one of the best free services you can get.
