Hey guys!

I got a new router a tp-link wireless n router. We decided to ditch our old D-link wireless g router. When i set it up i fallow every instruction on the manufacturers setup guide. I have a wifi connection but can't access any websites. I plugged the old router in and everything worked fine again.... Does any of you know what can i do? Is the router not compatible with the modem? Or am i at fault?

Thank you!

normally you should be able to connect to the router through the IP address and in your browser and on the one we have you can back up the settings file in case you need to reset the box

witch router? I can show you the new one. But not the old one. It wasn't me who set it up. I don't know the password for the old router.

I mean there must be some way to edit the settings on the router. On our FritzBox you can do that by typing in our IP address of the router into the Browser ex: 192.168.xxx.1   the one on the end is the only not variable number since your router will be number one on the network. you can type( while logged in on the current wifi network) into CMD: ipconfig /all to search for your IP adress. You will get a long list of settings of the different network cards in your PC. Choose the card with the longest settings information and you should see your IPv4 address. Copy the whole thing and delete the last number (or two depending on what number your PC has) and replace it with a 1.

If I type that number into my browser I get to the settings thing on the router and prompts me for the router administrator password

on macs you have to go to the network settings panel and I think you can see the IP there, if it is the MAC, you can usually change it on the router to the same as your old one

I'll start from the beginning, since I'm losing track too.

What I understand is that you got a new router and you can connect to the WIFI network, but not the internet, but your old router works fine.

My first guess would be looking at the settings of the new router and seeing if anything looks out of place. There must be instructions in the manual on how to change the router settings. If possible send us screenshots of the settings or a document.

If there isn't anything wrong with the router settings you can maybe find the MAC address of the old router and if possible change the MAC address from the new router to the same as the old one had. ( I can do some research if that works on our router, if you can send me a model number)

I did some research and found the old MAC address. Changed the new routers MAC Address to the old one, and it didn't change a thing.

Hi

if you can connect to the new Routers Wifi, but not connect through to the Internet, sounds like your two network devices are on two different networks.

make sure that both your Modem and Router are on the same IP Range..

eg;

if your Modem's IP is 192.168.1.1, make your new router 192.168.1.X (where 1<x<254)

another eg;

if your Modem's IP is 10.0.0.138, make your new router 10.0.0.X (where 1<x<254 & != 138)

any segment would be good, the more the better I would say :)

Okay. I already tried resetting the router to factory and do everything again. What is disable ports forwarding?

another thing to consider is DHCP

you may be running two DHCP Servers. you'll only need one.

I will check.
