Potentially shorted gpu risks?

If it's totally dead, no.

You'll simply get no video output.

If it's partially fried, you'll see plenty of video artifacting.

All the same, I'd examine the GFX card for obvious signs of scorched parts and if there is any signs of damage, don't try it.

I'll make sure the card doesnt look burnt. Thanks.

Risk of testing if your 970 is good or not using new hardware?  Assuming you’ve replaced that dodgy PSU and know what is up with your house power I think the worst that could happen is the PSU or mobo would detect a short and go into protect mode.  It’s just really unlikely the 970 died in a dangerous way even if it was dead.

Yea I have a completely new system. The old psu was a generic ibuypower psu. I'm throwing a sf leadex 3 gold at this build. Assuming the card doesn't look bad I'll throw it in to test. Thanks.

Hello,

I'm building a new computer and with the recent gpu shortages it took me awhile to secure a new gpu, but with all the shipping delays at the earliest it comes this Thursday, potentially coming in two weeks.

The only gpu I currently have access to is a 970. The psu that was in the 970 computer died a few months ago. The psu struggled to turn on, ramping to max briefly and then almost shutting off briefly. That went on for about 5 seconds and then the power grid of my room and the room next to me shut off, requiring a reset from the circuit breaker. When I reset the power the computer wouldn't turn on.

Is there any risk to testing if the 970 is dead in my new computer?

Thanks

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
