Verizon Wireless Latency Problem

Go to solution Solved by Tika,

Update : Fixed the problem by disabling "Adaptive Connectivity" under the network settings.

Hello. I have have recently purchased a Pixel 4a 5G and suffering very odd latency spikes and packet loss. Previously I was using a Moto Z3 for tethering but wanted an upgrade. The overall connection speed feels faster but gaming is almost impossible as I suffer weird ping spikes and almost complete connection loss. I have come here to see if anyone might know a solution. I can try on another computer as I recently updated this one to see if that is the issue. This problem is noticeable in : Battlefield 4/5, Discord Calls and Streams, Twitch live streams, Minecraft, and basically all other games I have that use online.
Here is a pingplotter graph connecting to google over ipv4.

So you're tethered to your Pixel 4a 5G and using cellular data to get an internet connection on your PC?

Are you connected to a cellular 5G signal or something else?

If to cellular data, I wouldn't be surprised. The amount of latency will increase depending on how many other users are simultaneously accessing the tower.

I am connected over 4G cellular and I have completely unlimited hotspot data. The amount of people on the network shouldn't have changed as I live in (put simply) the middle of nowhere. The only two variables that have changed to my knowledge is I have upgraded my phone and I have updated windows.

Edit : Yes I am tethered over USB to my PC, the specs of which are in my signature.

how good is your signal?

1 bar but this hasn't been a problem for the 6 months that i have used it this way. I tried using my switch for gaming and it also suffered the latency problem and im soon going to try a different sim to see if that's the problem.

The sim just gives your phone the info needed to assess the tower and allow you to use carrier services, it doesn't change speed. It could be new interference causing the problem. I would find an app to tell you signal strength like "network cell info lite" and anything less than -118dBm is probably going to cause issues.

Got a new sim just in case and no use. Cell info lite gives me around -110dBm. Like I said this was not a problem before, and I borrowed a friend's iPhone on Verizon and it worked fine..

Ok your phone alone is droping almost 50% of the data, I would close every application out, even better would be to go through setting and not allow your apps to use background data (except system processes)
