Native nvme raid support on AMD

I'm struggling to find a natively supported nvme raid controller for an AMD system.  The few that I've come across do not specify whether the support is on the sata or the nvme.  I was looking at the popular pcie express card by a ASUS  However it would appear that a specific chipset is required.  This machine is to host multiple virtual machines. I

currently run raid 10 on 4 mechanical drives. one has failed . being that the new generation of drives is so much faster i don't need to run raid 10 but a minimum of raid 1 is nessasary. My current setup is pretty dated socket AM3 but in excellent shape. Ideally I'd like to find a stand alone raid card but ill buy a new motherboard , cpu , ram ect to meet my needs , hmmm one other thing im not a windows user. I know that complicates things from a support side but I don't miss blue screens ......not even a little. If anyone has any experience with a Linux , AMD,  NVME + Raid system id rely appreciate some guidance this system is strictly just to host Linux vms thinking ryzen 3 if I need to update the entire platform I use a terminal not a gui I have no other requiremts

Since your running linux, just setup software raid. 

What distro are you using? Do you want raid on the boot drive?

Im using 16 Ubuntu server atm im aware ill need to hop on 20  I would prefer to boot from the raid array I'm using the software raid now but find it Cumbersome to rebuild the array in the event of a failure

Yea your gonna have to use ubutnu 20.04 here. Just install it with the raid option in the installer.

 

You really want software raid, its much easier here, more relilable, and has less issues than the amd solution. Don't use the amd raid on the board, its software raid under the hood anyways.

 Ive had many many many many many hours of pain trying to get a linux installation to see my raid array for install of any flavour or destro I am definitely ready to invest in a solution rather than fight with it anymore

 Indeed that's what I ended up doing last time  I thought maybe I was missing something whenever I configure the hardware raid pre installation I have all kinds of issues Thank you I was just making sure I wasn't being stupid

Really software raid is the way to go here, much better than the raid on the board.

 

What were you using for raid? Where you using md?

The AMD RAID is nightmare fuel.

I got fed up with it and moved to network attached storage.

Don't touch the raid on the board, its not hardware raid, and you really don't want it here, just use something like md, btrfs or zfs in ubuntu.
