Hi guys! Are the online PSU wattage calculators reliable?  I am fairly new to PC building and I am looking for a new GPU because the current one that I have is old and was a hand me down and I am just wondering if the new gpu that I was looking at would be too power hungry for my current PSU. Anything will help and thanks in advance! :)))

Just to clarify, I am asking if the psu wattage calculators online are reliable and if not where can I find out how much power I will really need. Here is a link to the calculator that I was looking at https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

I've alway found them to over estimate, but I suppose that's not as bad as under estimating. Most of these calculators just want to sell you a power supply, and nearly always recommend their high end models.

What spec is the current PC and what GPU do you want?

Edit: The one you linked to recommended 400w for a 3060ti and ryzen 5 3600, seems low to me actually.....So i'd always take them with a grain of salt.

CPU - Ryzen 7 5800x3D |  GPU - RTX 3080 TUF OC | Motherboard - ASUS TUF X570 | RAM - Patriot Viper Blackout 32GB 3200MHz | Case - InWin 805 | Boot Drive - Corsair MP600 PCIe 4.0  Storage - 2 x 1TB SSD's & 1 500GB SSD | PSU - Seasonic Focus Gold 1000w | Display - ASUS TUF VG27WQ Curved 1440P 165Hz | Cooling - ASUS TUF LC240 AIO + 5 aRGB Fans

500w will be fine for a 1660 super, it probably draws less wattage than your current 6870 dinosaur :P Can't comment on 3050/ti yet.

PSU calculators either over estimate or get the calculated draw by adding the max draw of each component. In the real world all your hardware will never simultaneously draw at it's max.

For 2+ years I was running a more power hungry system. R7 1700 + RX 580 8GB with a 450W Corsair SF. Never had a single issue. Under max load I was only drawing like 325W. Your system will not draw more than 300W. So wattage is not an issue here.

That said PSU quality is more of a concern, as it is not particular well made, because your system isn't going to hit the PSU to hard it should be fine, but if you upgrade to something like a RTX 3060/Ti I would go for a better quality unit.

Refer to this list:

I recommend no less than a Tier B, but if you were to upgrade just go Tier A.

I am not saying you have to upgrade. Just something to keep in mind.
