Random instant reboots

Go to solution Solved by macktruck6666,

Interesting enough, It appears to have been the graphics card.

I took the computer into a local computer store where we worked together to diagnose the problem. (mostly them trying stuff and me load testing it by playing games 馃槃)

Worked fine once we swapped out the graphics card.

So it seems that while playing games, somehow the graphics card would either trip the Power supply surge protection or draw to much power through the PCIE slot to cause the motherboard to trip the surge protection.

Luckily the store sold me a bargain GTX 780 to replace my 980 Ti until I can get a 3080.

Description: Computer was fine a few weeks ago. Computer turns itself off instantly and reboots. Only happens when playing games. Very common when exiting menus in games like Red Dead Redemption 2. May randomly happen other times without warning. Sometimes get message when booting that says motherboard detected a surge last boot. (unlikely as I just replaced the power supply today) Window error logs seems to not indicated any problems other then "kernel-power" and "unexpected shutdown". I have used multiple stress test software to test gpu, VRAM, CPU, RAM, ssd drives. No errors found. I did have a windows聽intel ssd drive go bad a few weeks ago and replaced. (may be unrelated)

OS: Windows 10聽

Drivers are up to date to the best of my knowledge.

Specs:: Asus Rampage V Extreme motherboard, 5820k I7聽processor, Geforce 980 Ti graphics card, Hard drives: Samsun 970, 850 EVO, Sandisk Ultra II, 16 gigs of Corsair Memory. 850 watt EVGA Supernova (just installed clearly overpowered for build)

BIOS: default

Comments: The reboot may be immediately when a game loads聽or after a few hours of gameplay so I'm reluctant to bring this to a shop as they will probably not thoroughly test it for hours. That being said, I need to find where the problem exists without replacing EVERYTHING in my computer. I may try to do a clean windows boot to see if it is something related to software (unlikely in my opinion). I do plan to eventually replace the 980ti with a 3080, but was hope to聽wait聽till the 3080 became more available. (side question: is there any better card at that price?) I was hoping to avoid upgrading/replacing the CPU/Motherboard any time soon.

so when psu didnt change anything id try to just have one drive with windows connected and if nothing changes i would do a clean install

I don't understand what you mean by windows connected. After the SSD drive that had windows died, I installed windows on another drive.

I was able to completely reinstall windows, but this time I tried the M.2 on the MB. Issue happened again and it rebooted after loading a scene in Red Dead Redemption 2. Likely to happen more when I have more time to use the computer. Problem is most likely a bad part, but the problem is to intermittent to determine which part it may be. Apart from randomly replacing the graphics card, motherboard, and cpu, I don't know what to do. Stinks that the 3000 series graphics cards are rare and other graphic cars are overpriced.
