esxi build power draw

paddy-stone

I'm debating whether I should get a new CPU for my esxi server (currently using 16 thread CPU and consuming approx 120W/hr), for something a bit lower power with an iGPU.... might even consider going intel for new mobo + cpu. At current prices it's costing about £144 a year to power it 24/7, so approx 2 years worth of power to buy something like a 10300 that has 4 cores 8 threads or even the 10400 for 6/12, which if I only power a few VMs up at any one time should be enough I think.

Anyone using a 10300/10400 for a 24/7 build can comment on power draw?

I considered a really low power build, but they have crap amount of cores. Unless there's some I don't know about that people could recommend?

Well that's why I'm using ESXi now rather than bare metal, so I can spin up VMs of different OS whenever I want. But ones I have running on there constantly ATM are my freenas VM that's doing all my storage needs with an LSI HBA passing the disks through to the VM, and an ubuntu 20.04 VM that I use for a few things, not least of which is if I realise I need to copy some data to/from freenas, I can remotely connect on any of my desktops/laptops to accomplish this without needing to keep the machine running after I've started the copy operation.

I have more planned to do, but haven't gotten around to it yet as I only set it up a few days ago.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that and see if it's a viable option... not sure where to buy in the UK and/or if the cost is going to be extreme.

Check out supermicro embedded epyc or embedded atom, for low power consumption.

Think they'll be out of my price range for this build... plus I think they are more for rack server builds IIRC, which I'm not looking for currently as don't have the space for a rack ATM. Sorry I should have been clearer about my current needs.

I currently just bought a silverstone https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/2FjG3C/silverstone-case-sstgd08b

And it's living on my media/entertainment center in my bedroom, so a rack is out of the question for sure as it'd be too loud. Even as it is the silverstone is just bearable for noise at night. I am goinjg to swap in some silent wings fans to see if that makes a difference.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

Some interesting ones there, I love the look of the 16c atom, I saw that when they were released. I will have to see if my budget could stretch a bit for those. But they will stay on my wish list for sure.

Thank you both again. they are definitely interesting at those power draws.
