so as im playing rdr2 and minimized the game to check something and i see in afterburner that my gpu is hitting a voltage limit at certain scenes, even when its at stock

usually im playing with temp and power limits at max, 100 core and 700 memory

ive changed the voltage and now its at 100% and my card still hits voltage limit

how is the card still hitting voltage limit?

the power draw is moving between 230-238w depending on the stuff thats on the screen (max power draw is 350w)

temp is around 60-63c

i think its effecting the stability of my overclock when im going 120 core and 1100 memory (its not the silicon's quality)

on less demanding games like battlefield 4 and 5 and fortnite i can go 120 core and 1100 mem easily without stability problem

or is it just the game's optimization?

card is a 2080 aorus

The RTX series just has very strict voltage limits imposed that when overclocked, or even at stock, can easily be hit in certain situations. You cannot really over volt these cards like you used to be able to, so the voltage limits are usually hard stops.

GPUs will always hit a voltage limit just because of how GPU Boost works as it cannot scale beyond the frequency table it's supposed to run at, there are many limitations that prevent the card from boosting to the point of instability, the voltage limit is just one of them.

 

and the voltage slider doesn't do anything and it doesn't increase voltage at all from what it can previously hit, it's unclear what it does.

 

TL;DR there's nothing wrong with your card

Different games would utilize parts of the GPUs differently, that's why you cannot test stability on a single game, you have to test it on a varied set of workloads

As stated nvidia has hardware to limit the volts pushed into the card, it's possible to mod the card to allow more power (shunt mods) but entirely a do at your own risk thing.

stressing the hardware differently, rdr2 may be more demanding and likely to ferret out instability similar to how p95 is much better than cinebench at detecting instability

yeah i know its just the first time im encountering voltage limit so i thought maybe it has something to do with stability even if its a very small chance
