(Sorry for the necro, but thought I should ask here given it's quoting people's comments)

Then I would buy pins and connectors from ModDIY or PerformancePCs and crimp on new pins and install new connectors.  I wouldn't splice in connectors from another cable.

What would be the harm in splicing in connectors from another cable? I have a leftover 6-pin Cablemod Pro PCIe power cable that I want to convert into an 8-pin (full wires, not the GPU connector side-wires extension) by cutting and splicing together wires the Molex cables from my set that I don't use. Because they're shorter than the 6-wires of the PCIe 6-pin, I'll have to splice together two halves per wire (which will already have the original female connectors attached). Mind you, this is only for the extra Sense+Ground wires, so no current will be flowing over them.

If I'm cutting and soldering the same cables from the set -- thus wire/shielding properties are all the same -- would it be a problem if I solder-spliced leftover cables to make these two Sense/Ground PCIe wires? I want to make these two wires the same length as the other 6. I'm also extremely proficient at good, clean soldering. But perhaps I'm missing something as to why not to do this.

but If you really insist on repairing the cables they should be crimped not soldered. A cheap hobby iron does not have the thermal mass required to properly solder thick gauge wire.

What about a quality solid soldering station like Weller WES51? Surely that would be able to solder cabling such as this?

This wasn't good reason to revive old thread. Please post your own in future. You can quote/copy quotes and link to originals if needed.

Since I was quoting two people's responses from that thread, I thought it was appropriate for context. Perhaps someone from that thread may have commented an update on their experience or knowledge they've since learned, but can't now because they have no sub/connection to this thread. The standards also don't mention anything about reviving.

It might be good to update the standards regarding reviving, what's appropriate or not.

Our Community Standards are broad description of how one should conduct themselves on forums. They don't cover all, like things that are seen as generally good ways of using forums.

If you like to read more specific and strict set of rules, those for Level1 forums are good:

Reviving Old Threads

Each thread can be revived or brought back within 6 months. Look at the thread carefully and consider if it is still relevant. Would it be better to make a new thread instead? Remember that you can link back to old topics. When a thread is brought back after 6 months, the post reviving the thread is reviewed.

Why only 6 months?

It is plenty of time to discuss a thread. Keep in mind this is 6 months from the last post in the thread.

Will a Revived Thread be Locked?

No. The revived post will be reviewed to determine the best course of action for it.

How is a revived thread reviewed by Admin, Mods, and Leaders?

The post that revived the thread is examined.

  • What does it say?
  • If it is asking a question, the post is moved to a new thread and linked back to the old one.
  • If it is a bot/spam account, the post is deleted and the bot/spam account is deleted.
  • If the post is low effort, it is deleted. The user who posted the low effort post is messaged.
  • If the post that revives the thread is from the original poster of the thread and the post is adding new content or updates, then the post is not deleted.
  • If the post that revives the thread would be better suited as a new thread, then it is moved into a new thread.

Are there exceptions?

Yes. Topics which continue for extended period of time like : TV Shows, Megathreads, the wallpaper thread, etc.

What if someone deliberately revives old threads?

If it is determined a forum member is deliberately reviving old threads that exceed the 6 month period, then the admins and moderators will treat the action like a forum rule has been broken.

Threads Will Also be reviewed after 6 months

Threads will be checked on after it is six months old from the 1st post. Leaders and Moderators will look at the replies to see:

  • Are the replies still relevant to the topic.
  • Do the replies contribute to the topic.
  • Would the replies be better as a new topic.
  • Is the topic still relevant
  • Could the most recent post be moved to a new separate topic

https://forum.level1techs.com/faq

Besides, your post was reported by member, and also received trollish reply in the original thread. So moving it to its own was overall better action. If you want to suggest changes to our policies, please post thread to Forum Suggestions subforum and we can see if community supports it.

E: Emphasizing my point that you can link to original and copypaste quotes, or tag people.
