Hello everyone, new to the forums form the UK.

I've bought a Dell R610 with two 6 core 2.6ghz Intel cpu's, and 32Gb RAM.

We are a family of gamers, and Part-Time youtubers, and I wanted to build a server for us to play Rust, Modded Minecraft and other low rated games (nothing too demanding as yet) on our own home network.

I've managed to reset to factory settings on the server, and finally (no thanks to java) get my tower to connect to the Dell R610 via IDRAC6.

I put windows 10 on it, with an SSD and two (for now) 320GB hard drives, thinking that I could run it like a tower, and just connect to the games on it, but I see that's not working for me?

I have no idea now what to do next? I've seen youtube vids about PLEX and NAS, also linux server and windows server... But to be honest I have no idea what to do next.

I'm hoping the wisdom and knowledge of the forum and it's members can point me in the right direction so I can carry on with my build.

Many thanks in advance, by a clueless member, but hoping to learn.

Hello!

Have you open the ports or allowed the game through the firewall?

Take a look at this guide. It will work with any game servers.

This may sound silly but you didn't say you installed the game servers. You should also be aware that installing either Minecraft or Rust in the conventional way will not make it a server either. Have you installed the servers?

Join the Appleitionist cause! See spoiler below for answers to common questions that shouldn't be common!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

Just going to go over this, as I can't remember if I did or not. I watched a lot of videos about a lot of things...lol.

But appreciate the help, so will get tight on it.

I've added the made up servers for Rust and Minecraft, just like I would on my tower to play it. I've used the SteamCMD.exe for rust, including Oxide for mods, and for Minecraft a plugin for Minecraft version, and plugins for that. The Minecraft one is several servers in one on a BungeeCord setup.

And the Dell R610 server has windows 10 as a operating system, and nothing else.

Didn't know if I could do that, or I have to use another software instead of, or with windows to make this work?

I've used my tower to host for family to connect to, but it becomes laggy, so decided to go down the server route, but I'm just really out of my depth.....

I've done all that now, but still can't connect to the server for games, although they are running fine on the server.

What internet ports do I use, I've got the router pugged into the single port on the rear left, and nothing in the bank of 4 to the right (in the middle at the back) is this what I'm missing?

So you can't connect to them locally either from another PC in your house?

If thats the case, it sounds like you need to open up ports on Windows Firewall. The easy way to test if this is the case, is to temporarily disable Windows Defender Firewall, and test if you can connect.

If this works, then you should re-enable the firewall. Then you should work out the ports you're using for each game (which you would have specified in their configs) and create an Allow rule for each. Rust Dedicated Server uses 28015 by default.

Once you have it working locally, then you also need to make the port-forward (it might be called virtual servers) rules in your router to forward traffic from the port you specify, to your server:port

I turned my firewall off on the server, but still can't connect. I've definitely missed something but can't see what.

I've only got one ethernet lead to the server, which is the IDRAC6 port. Do I need another lead for the other bank of 4 at the back.

Or could it be something else?

Many thanks for your response.

Are you connecting to the IDRAC? that is why it won't work because that port is used for management. You will need to connect it to one these ports:

That does make a lot of sense, wasn't sure if they was used for other servers to connect to...lol.

I'll fire the old girl back up again, and try again, thank you so much.

Fingers crossed....

Not to worry! Everyone makes mistakes. Good luck. :D
