3070 5900 build?

Is B550 better than X570?

they are a bit different, can't really say one is "better" than another

Who Should Upgrade to the X570 Platform?

Some professionals may need even more power and extensibility than what the B550 platform can offer. For such professionals, MSI’s X570 motherboards are the ideal choice. If any of the following apply to you, the X570 platform is a better choice:
  • You use more than 4 USB 3.1 devices
  • You use more than 6 SATA devices
  • You use more than 3 Gen 4 M.2 SSDs

Budget (including currency): 2000

Country: Netherlands

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Game development, rendering, video editing, gaming and possibly streaming in the future. Games I'm looking forward to the most are doom eternal and anno 1800

Other details Already bought a 3070, I think I'll stick to 1440p, quite likely dual monitor

Hey! So I managed to snatch a 3070 msi ventux2x and I want to build a computer.

I have been gaming on mac for 3 years has been painful... Frostpunk on 6fps lowest settings 😭

I'm looking for some advice, currently I'm leaning towards the following

Dark rock pro 4

Samsung 980 pro m.2 PCIe4 1TB, 7000MB/s 🤔

Straight power 750w gold rating by be quiet

Dark base 500DX by be quiet

Corsair Vengeance RGB 2x8gb, 3600MHz, CL18

Rog Strix X570-E Gaming, not sure why I would need bluetooth/wifi, but it's on a decent deal for 259 euro with a cashback

As for processor I'm debating the most,  basically any 5000 series processor. Any clue which one will be the best bang for the buck? I'm thinking of the 5900X.

I have no clue which motherboard will be better, B550 or X570. I do want to take advantage of PCIe gen 4

Any tips?

Kind regards,

Julian <3

that's overkill, especially for gaming. you'll get 10-15% faster loading screens than with a pcie 3 nvme ssd. not sure it's worth it. maybe for video editing, but then again, there are cheaper pcie4 ssds out there that have the same speed.

b550 should be enough, get a tomahawk or an asus strix or tuf

Ah, so I'm kind of mostly buying it for fun to be honest, quite overkill. Another important reason is when I develop games and I have to create android/ios builds, it can take quite a while... Having a faster test cycle will come in quite handy.

I think I'll end up buying the 5900X

Is B550 better than X570? I think the difference between the tomahawk B550 and the current Rog Strix X570-E is around 50 bucks

x570 is better but b500 is enough unless if you want more than 1 nvme and all sata slots on the board

Ah thnx! Yeah, doubt I'll ever go for more than 1 nvme. 1TB is more than enough for me. If I extend, it will be a single HDD quite likely.

You can install multiple NVMe drives into a B550 board just like you can on X570 - it's just that only one M.2 slot will run at PCIe 4.0 speeds, since you're working with just the PCIe 4.0 lanes offered by the CPU.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

A B550 Tomahawk should work fine with a 5900X, but you should probably wait for reviews.

Also, get a lower latency ram kit. This kit isn't RGB, but it is 3600mhz CL16 https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232880?Description=3600mhz&cm_re=3600mhz-_-20-232-880-_-Product

geometry is hard
b550 > x570

I would love to, problem is the area where I live doesn't sell any CL 16 3600 for that price. For this I would end up paying a premium of 40.  Really no clue why it's this unbalanced. Someone told me frequency was more important than latency, so I thought I'd go for the 3600CL18. RGB was around the same price as non RGB... I think a difference of 3-5 euro.

These were basically my options for around 80
- 3600 CL 18
- 3400 CL 16

For 110

-4000 CL 18

-3600 CL 16

Yes as @Mateyyysaid only one will be gen 4 and with some b-series boards, some .2 slots share bandwidth with sata slots, so the b450 tomahawk, will disable 2 sata ports when both m.2 slots are connected, but this is not an issue with the b550 tomahawk

I think I'll just pay the extra 40 bucks for the Asus Rog Strix X570E, for future proofing. Don't mind this trade off.  Also saw it was quite high on the motherboard tier list. Pricing in europe is just off sometimes.

Your choice, but I honestly see no reason, unless you need multiple nvme ssds at gen 4 speeds

Huh. That is true but there isn't a huge difference between 3400 and 3600. If i were you I would go w 3400 CL16, but thats just me.

Feels like this should be an LTT video for ryzen hahaha. Their last one was a techquickie explaining it, not sure how much things have changed since 2016

That video was tested w a 6700K I'm pretty sure, but RAM frequency and latency matter alot more with ryzen.

What frequency would you say would be the most beneficial for Ryzen?  Minimum of 3000 and after 3600 diminished returns? Maybe I'm saying something stupid with this, not sure :)

Yeah, for ryzen go for anything between 3000 and 3600. Some benchmarks show that anything over around 3800 can drop performance a bit

Ah! Found one from an alternative site, a 3600 CL17 19-19-32 instead of the rgb one with CL18 22-22-42. I guess choice is made!
