Computer Crashes - No Error

Go to solution Solved by narrdarr,

Cases:

P300a

P400a

P500a

Lancool 2 mesh performance

Td500

Meshify c

Coolers:

Scythe fuma 2

Scythe mugen 5 rev b

Cooler master hyper 212 black

Bequiet Pure rock 2 black

Arctic freezer esport 34

There are more expensive overkill cpu cooler, but all of these coolers will outperform the stock cooler. And should be fit any of these cases.

Cost is slightly below $100 to $150 depending on which 2 you go with.

Double check cpu clearance of the case with height of the cpu cooler to make sure it fits with your choosen.

Hello, I am having an issue where my computer is crashing in select games (so far, Final Fantasy XV and Baldurs Gate 3) with no error, no blue screen, nothing. Computer just shuts down completely, and I have to press the power button to get back on. I did look at "event viewer" to see if there were any notable events, but the only thing I saw was some errors for the Skype app, which I've since uninstalled. I've just recently replaced my PSU and GPU, and this issue was persistent with my previous PSU and GPU, so I'm pretty sure they are not the issue. How would I go about troubleshooting this, and is there any likely causes?

Specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core 3.6GHz

Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX

GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080 EVGA FTW3

RAM: Team T-FORCE Vulcan Z 3200MHz (max speed) 16GB (2X8GB)

PSU: 850W Gold EVGA

Maybe a thermal shutdown

Also

Your 850w is technically in spec but some have had issues with power spikes for 3xxx gpu cause the psu to shutdown.

Have you checked the system log in event viewer or just the app log?

Seems likely.

I heard yesterday that some multirail powersupplies have problems with over current on specific rails.

I would try a different layout on the Powersupply if its modular. If not check if its even multi or single rail

If you have this one: https://de.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=220-G2-0850-X3

You should have an eco switch on it. I would check if its engaged.

I did check the system log, nothing of note in there, the only error is for starting up after an improper shutdown.

I don't think its the power supply issue you're suggesting, only because I was having this exact same issue with my 600W power supply / 2070 super setup as well. I'm not sure how to confirm this though.

Very first make sure your system meets the minimum system requirements to play the game Final Fantasy XV and Baldurs Gate 3.

If everything is fine than it might happen your graphics card drivers are outdated or missing, so make sure to update them.

Yes, it for sure does. GPU drivers are all up to date.

I assume the ECO switch is the little one next to the on/off switch for the power supply, that one is set to off.

Maybe try:

reseating gpu

If your using daisy chain/pigtail power connectors. DONT

Did you test for thermal shutdowns?

I reseated the GPU and made sure power cables were secure last night, I'll try again today.
I have 1 8pin connector for each of the 3 connector slots, so I think this should be okay? I'm using stock power cables from the PSU supplier

As for thermal shutdowns...we may be onto something here? I just ran baldurs w/ HW Monitor running on the second monitor, and noticed CPU was going over 100C...way too hot. Looks like it peaked at 4.2Mhz on all cores. I haven't done any overclocking myself, and am using the stock cooler for the CPU. could this be the issue here possibly? I've checked and my cpu cooler has a L/H switch on the bottom, I'm going to switch that to high, and see if temps stay cooler...

 I wouldn't use hardware monitor

Use hardware info instead.

Hardware monitor has issues with ryzen.

Second try running r20.

If your over 83c with 20 to 30c room temp you definitely have a cpu cooling issue.

Hm yeah, I downloaded hardware info, ran the game with the high switch on for the fan, and CPU temps eventually did climb to ~100C. I took off my case front panel, and the temps dropped, won't go over 80C...this case may not be able to handle the heat load possibly. I'm going to test it some more with the panel off and see what happens. Appreciate the help

NZXT H510. I'm starting to think especially after more closer look that it doesn't have adequate air flow.

Yeah those nzxt cases are known for terrible air flow. Stock cooler doesnt help in there either.

Oof. that's rough, do you have any recommendations? After dropping for the 3080....I'm not too worried about another 100 or so for a case lmao. I'm going to run it some more with no side panel to double sure its temps, I suppose I could just keep it running like this with no panel, but not sure that's the greatest for keeping dust out.

Thanks man, such a great help. I'm was seriously worried about this one.
