DAW Intel or Ryzen

I have been asked to build a PC for a friend that is moving away from MAC for his DAW running Cubase and light video editing.  He currently uses an Antelope Discrete 8 as an audio interface.  He is using it via thunderbolt 2.  I am looking at either going with a Gigabyte Z390 Designare with a 9700K or a MSI B550 Vison D with a 3700X.  I believe the 3700X would give better performance for him but I am worried about running a thunderbolt interface on AMD especially with the backward compatibility.  Does anyone have any advice?
