Had decided on an ASUS channel board (either Z87 or X79). But am now reconsidering Sabretooth boards (basically because they are built like 'brick &%£$houses' and have a V long warranty) but initially I had rejected them over noise concerns (I imagined those little motherboard fans screaming their little heads off, and I want a quiet as anything system).

So for anyone who has experience of these boards do the fans make that much noise?

Can you hear them outside the case (even a silence optomised one like the R4)?

The fans are totally optional and they don't move enough air to make a big temp difference. Most test's with the fans on/off resulted in almost the same MB temps. You can just leave them in the box and enjoy your cool and silent system. :)

You can turn those fans off in the bios as long as you have good air flow.

And yes, they're god awful loud.

They make noise but expecting any small fan to be quiet is unrealistic. That being said they are entirely optional and I run my Sabertooth(Z77) without the fans with no issues.

I had the Z87 Gryphon which uses same armour and fans as the rest, the fans aren't as loud as everyone makes them out to be but they are definitely audible by a high pitch whine. From my experience the H100 drowned out most of the noise (set on a very aggressive fan curve) so it didn't really matter. If you do have a very quite build you can just go without, the armour is the main reason for better temps because it keeps the hot hair being blown from the Graphics Card of the motherboard.

I don't use the fans, and my motherboard temps are around 28 Celsius. they are loud, but you don't need them at all.

So no fans then.  I can see the 40mm fan at the I/O block not getting installed but what about the one over the PCH (southbridge), does this get controlled by the UEFI(BIOS) or is there a fan plug which can get pulled?

Hmm mine have never really been noticable but u can just not put them in or unplug them on the newer ones. On the older ones just have them stay off until a certain temp is hit.
