this is to generic. this is like asking 'tell me about pcs'.

if there is something specifc you want to know then shoot, otherwise you should look at the subjects of the other 9000 threads in this sub forum, most likely your questions have been answered.

Storage doesnt just mean servers, storage is an entire subset of IT. Theres a lot of material out there and training courses including vendor ones to teach you about these things.

You have big solutions from the likes of HP(3PAR), NetApp, EMC, Nimble, etc....storage can encompass anything from local storage to NAS and massive SAN's. Theres block level vs object/file level. And of course you have all the different protocols tied in there...NFS, SMB/CIFS, iSCSi, etc...In between Server infrastructure and Storage, you also have Backup & Restore, which is tied in with storage as well. These days with storage you also need to understand how it works with Hypervisor platforms like VMware & Hyper-V.

If you want recommendations on hardware to get, i'd recommend looking at the old enterprise gear like Dell R710's or HPE DL380 G7 servers.

You can play with local array configurations, play with hypervisor installs, firmware and IPMI management, etc...

If you have more than 1 then you can setup clusters, use one as a storage target with software like FreeNAS for configuring iSCSi LUN's that you can mount to the other for learning block level storage, etc....

Keep in mind that for large enterprise though hardware is largely becoming a niche market as IaaS / TaaS become increasingly popular and many businesses outsource the management of their hardware to specialised companies (aka datacenters), and the continued adoption of Cloud Services. Of course if you'll be looking to work with small businesses, then they're generally still very much server based and much more simple solutions (e.g a NAS box in an office for >10 staff to access for shared documents).

craigslist and simmilar are great for cheap racks.

Hunt locally if you can, there are some good deals to be find. Anything really works as a practice server, really depends on your need.

If you want to get a job in this, you will need an education in a related program. Minimum will be a two year tech school. During this time, you will develop a path of what interests you. Follow that and read everything you can.
