Just do a complete format, you can format it several times if you so wish to make sure the data is gone. There are programs that do the same thing, overwrites the data and deletes it and formats it for security reasons. CCleaner had it where you can tell it to do that 10 times or 100 times.

Just do a quick format and be done with it.

If you were getting rid of it, then I would say to actually "wipe" it with something like dban.

But if you're using it, there's no point to that.

It won't get faster if you perform a full 35 passes wipe or anything of the sort.

How wiped do you need it to be? The only true 100% unrecoverable guaranteed way to completely prevent any data recovery ever is to physically destroy the hard drive and it's platters. If you just need to 'erase' it for your own reuse then just reformat it. If you're looking to erase it because it's being donated or given to someone then something like eraser would work.
