Java acting funny

Hey so when I try to set the amount of ram my Java VM uses it only says "Not enough space" but I do have enough. I set it to 2G (I have a 16GB in my pc and like 8GB free) and it just says an error. But when I just double click the .jar file it opens with god knows how much ram but it works. Its just it would be nice to control the amount ram that it uses for bug testing and the such. Do you guys have any clue what the issue could be?
