Hi I have another possible dumb question about networking.

Ive recently purchased an RE650 range extender and it works perfectly. However ive noticed that while all of the devices in my household including computers and smartphones have no issues connecting to its network, my Note 9 in particular always says that it cannot connect as it can't find an ip address. It Will eventually connect if I retry several times but its annoying to do so every day. Im aware of the many work arounds including setting a static ip address for my phone.

However my question is that what are the possible negatives of doing so. Ive read several posts regarding the differences between static and dynamic addresses, but I still don't understand why my phone in particular has such an issue, and what possible issues I might face by setting only my phone to a static ip. Also if there aren't really any big issues, why aren't all phones set to a static ip to prevent this issue in the first place

Any responses are appreciated and Sry if this has been asked before.

Edit: doesn anyone know how to permanently solve this issue at its core without having to do any work arounds cus I just dont get why my phone in particular has this problem.

I did some research on this a while ago trying to fix a similar issue, and this is what I remember. I may not be completely right here and someone can correct me if that's the case. However, from what I remember:

Dynamic ip addresses work by allowing your device to scan what ip addresses on a network are already in use. Your device then picks an ip that is unused so that you can connect to the network. You can't have two devices on the same network with the same ip address. If you set a static ip, your phone will always have that specific ip no matter what wifi network you are on. This means that if you try to connect to a wifi network in a public place, or at someone else's house where that ip is already in use by a different device, your device will be unable to connect unless you turn back on dynamic ip or manually change your ip to one that is not in use.

I mostly speak from my own past experience from similar problems. My solution may not work for you, but I'll always try my best to help as much as I can. If you want me to see your reply, make sure to quote my comment or mention me @WaggishOhio383, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Hey thanks for the reply.

Hmmm this seems like a valid issue which makes me even more frustrated cus it looks like there isnt a convenient way for me to solve this, unless you know of a way to solve it? I simply dont know why my phone in particular has this issue.

I unfortunately don't know why your phone would be having this issue connecting to your WiFi... Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the cons of a static ip. Hopefully someone else on this forum can think of a solution!

Actually, the router assigns the IP address to clients based on the DHCP pool that it's working in. And that dynamic IP is leased for a set time, so when it expires, a new IP is issued to the same device.

Firstly, static IPs don't have to be assigned at the device level. You can reserve an IP address for a particular device based on it's unique MAC address from within the router itself. Most home routers have this feature. This avoids you having to manually change the static IP in your client device when you move to another wireless zone.

Secondly, some client devices just don't work well with some wireless routers and range extender. The fact that your phone is the only device that this is happening to makes it highly likely that this is an issue related to the phone itself. Maybe it might need a firmware/software upgrade.

I, for one, am not a fan of range extenders. But if it fulfills the purpose that you need it for, then there's no problem with it. My advice would be to run a test: turn off the range extender for a while and see if you still get the problem with your phone.

Do you mind elaborating more on the first point? I might give it a try and see if it works for me.

Hmm I wonder why a modern samsung would have such issues when the rest of my family's phones dont, but I guess something must ve wonky with mine.

I know range extenders arent a perfect solution but unfortunately they were my only option. Ive tried the test and it didnt seem to help anything, ill try it again.

You'll have to look around your router's webGUI to find where IP reservation can be set. In some instances, you can apply the reservation from the router's client list.

The rest of the people in the family wouldn't happen to use iPhones, would they?

What wireless settings is your wireless router using?
