Hi guys,

I just opened COD Warzone for some morning gaming and my GPU temps shot up to 80 in the game menu! Fans are at 66% and GPU usage is pegged at 100%!

I have a 1060 6GB. I updated my BIOS a couple of days ago and had no problems and last night I tightened the GPU holder that comes with the case.

Anybody has any suggestions before I tank my card on a saturday?

Besides, now is not the time to buy a new card in between 2 generations of Nvidia...

Thank you in advance :)

Have you played Warzone before on that card? You sure it wasn't just the game pushing it hard, it is a terribly optimized game. Also, from personal experience I can tell you that thermal paste goes bad quickly as in once it's gone the temps start to rise up in a matter of days/weeks. It's not a "slow burn" type of deal where the degrees add up in the span of years. If I had to guess I'd say a chemical process occurs in the thermal paste after a certain time and it makes it less conductive thermally which skyrockets temps. I'd start by repasting and cleaning the card. If that doesn't help might be a fucked up bios. But looking at the fact that you're sitting at 82C and only 66% fan speed that's within the norm and a repasting most likely will fix the issue (as it did for me).

Ada is worse than Ampere which is worse than Fermi, change my mind.

I gotta see about the thermal paste tomorrow, but this doesn't make sense that the GPU will be at 100% in the game menu as soon as I start it up. Never did that. And as soon as I close the game the temps go back to 40 in a second.

If the menu is blazing on with 400 FPS it's actually possible. Some games are like that. I personally don't play Warzone but I've seen games behave like that plenty of times. It could also be a game update that introduces something fucked up that is stressing the GPU. Try another game and see if it's alright. If it is then that's a Warzone problem not a GPU problem.

There has been a development.

I pulled out the GPU to give it a blow and a dust off. I rearranged the GPU holder bracket so that it's a bit more loose and here's the result after 15 mins of actual gameplay.

So if anyone else is pedantic dumba$$ like me and like the GPU very tightly secured, apparently it affects something in there.

1060 Strix 6Gb.

If you have the PCI bracket tight, and the chassis is slightly mis-aligned with the motherboard, it can pull one end of the PCIe connector up, causing a bad connection. Misalignment can be caused by a bent or deformed rear face on the PC case, for example. Some cases (typically cheaper ones), even come from the factory with bad alignment due to poor tolerances. Other factors might include incorrect height motherboard standoffs, stuff like that.
