NAS SOFTWARE DECISION

I'm pretty new to the NAS scene. Before I do a build I do a ton of research and I'm in sort of the deep end of things and would love some advice. I'm trying to build a NAS for footage storage that has some sort of security in the case of disk failure and such. I'm a filmmaker so most of the files will be large video files. I would also like to be able to edit right off the NAS instead of needing to bring the footage to my desktop. What should I go with? Unraid - freenas? or something else? I was thinking of unraid but I heard there's a downside specially when it comes to read/write speeds. Any advice helps.

Unraid is good for home server stuff and has redundancy but the write speed is limited to the single disk speed.

If you are doing big raw files that are requiring more than the speed runs at the performance might not be there.

Read speeds are fine it will be the same as a raid platform.

Something like FreeNAS uses ZFS and will give you read and write speeds of what you expect benchmark wise.

Both can be downloaded and trialed for 30 days my suggestion is give it a go and see which one you like.

It will come down to what you are doing with the footage is it being edited over the network on these disks or just being stored and read back later for editing.
