Bluetooth in Manjaro not working after reboot

After months of using this build, rebooting randomly broke something. After powering off and then powering on at the wall for something else (I'm using an extension with a couple of things connected), my motherboard's onboard bluetooth isn't working at all.

I can reinstall bluez and use it via:

sudo pacman -S bluez bluez-utils
sudo modprobe btusb
sudo systemctl start bluetooth
sudo systemctl enable bluetooth

...but my Xbox controller isn't being recognised when I attempt to pair it. I have not performed any updates recently and this has never happened before.

My motherboard is an MSI B550 Mag Mortar, and I'm running Manjaro 20.1.1 on the 5.8.11-1 kernel.

Check your bios, ensure it is still enable in the mobo bios?

If bluetooth was disabled in the BIOS I wouldn't be able to enable it via the terminal. Plus, how would it automatically disable itself just by rebooting when I've powered on this system and then powered it off every day for six months without any issue?

Edit: There are no options in BIOS to enable or disable bluetooth.

Download/Update Linux Driver(s).

Everything is up to date. Like I said, I haven't done any recent updates, nor changed anything that would have interfered with bluez or anything else.

Because that kind of thing happens. I assure you it happens.

Perhaps your bios battery is low/dead and the system reset to defaults?

And your OS already had drivers installed so perhaps its still trying because it has file in place. Im not an expert at linux, but i have seen windows continue to report hardware that has failed or been turned off.

This looks to be a problem at the software level with either my kernel or my bluetooth drivers. The question is, how did one reboot destroy settings that have been unaffected by hundreds of prior reboots?

I would have to just say Welcome to the world of computers to be honest.

No different then you go out to start your car one day and it wont start.

Or you turn on the hotplate and it doesnt get hot.

It happens. From sunspots to dying sectors on storage components, there is a large number of reasons a 1 can become a 0 or NULL and mess something up.

Sounds like perhaps the Bluetooth module died. Maybe reseat the Bluetooth module if possible.

I fixed it by:

  1. Turning off my PC, and then switching off the PSU.
  2. Turning off the power at the wall, and then turning it back on.
  3. Switching on my PSU and then powering up my system as usual.

Might be something to do with how the bluetooth module on my motherboard is receiving power. Oh well -- just glad I can carry on playing New Vegas.
