But it turns out the GPU died:

So I'm looking for a replacement GPU. I do not plan on replacing anything else.

I would prefer an AMD GPU, because Nvidia is not supported on newer Hackintosh versions since Apple won't sign the drivers. It works on Linux, but I do not like the fact that they have proprietary drivers. So in this sense, I prefer AMD for being more open.

But I do not have a strong preference, if Nvidia can deliver a significantly better performance at the same price, I will consider it. My display has both freesync and g-sync compatibility.

The GTX 1070 was enough for what I've used it. I was looking at the new GTX 3070 and while it looks great, I'm not convinced that I want to spend this much (500€+) on a GPU.

What would you recommend?

Just buy any officially supported osx gpu up to 5700xt.

This is also an option, buy the cheapest AMD gpu just for hackintosh, i would suggest rx530 / 560.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

For $300, doubt you're going to get anything that will push that monitor.  1440p 144Hz is going to run you $400+, like the 5700XT or whatever new hotness AMD brings at the end of the month.

Wow, still? When I was buying in 2016, the ~500€ range was about there. For example, my gtx 1070 can get rainbow six siege to 1440p@144 if I reduce the quality a bit (still looks great).

I would expect that in 4 years, there'd be some improvements to get the same performance at lower price. But one can dream...

I guess rx5700xt gets close, with a bit more performance than 1070. But a bit over the budget: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1070-vs-AMD-RX-5700-XT/3609vs4045

But mentioned in my previous post, I'll wait to see the new lineup and I guess I'll have to go a bit over my budget. Or maybe I can grab a rx5700xt at a bit lower price :D

I should have clarified the games, sorry.  In eSports and similar, then you should be fine.

Thanks for cleaning up.
Btw which make of the AMD gpu would you recommend? I’ve heard that Asus has good quality in general, but I see that Sapphire Nitro is quite popular in the AMD world.
I’ve been out of the loop for years, and even when I was buying my build, I’ve ignored AMD and just focused on nvidia, especially with their big 10xx lineup announcement at the time.
