Dump cache to array UnRAID? Issues...

mao91

I'm trying to dump my cache to the array so I can remove the cache drive, but I'm having issues. No matter what I do, my cache drive is showing 22.6GB of data on it, even when I've set all shares to "yes," invoked the mover in full, then rebooted, and invoked the mover again. What is this 22.6GB of data and why can't I move it? Will it compromise the data on my array if I remove the cache drive?

If what I'm posting has already been posted, I'm sorry.

what files are on the drive? Can you ssh in and run something like du to see what is using that space?

How would I go about doing that? I apologize, as I am a mere peasant and am largely uneducated in the ways of servers.

can you ssh into it or open a shell on the system? Then you can browse what files are on the drive. I think you can just locally use the box and log into a shell. then run du to find the big files on the drive.

Or just test it, see if there are any errors after you remove the drive.

ssh is a way to remote into a system, gives you a remote shell.

shell is a text console, like cmd.

du is a program on linux that shows file size.

If you want simple, id just try it without the ssd and see if anything is missing, or see what files are on the drive if you plug it into another linux system.

See what files are missing? Ugh I've got over a terabyte on the nas already. Maybe I could just wipe the array and start all over and let it transfer that same 1TB + overnight. :nervous lel:

Okay so how would I SSH into my NAS? What tool do I use and how do I do it? So far I'm just using the web UI for unraid. The nas is on my local network.

I think there is a ssh service on unraid, but the easy way is to just use the screen that it boots into and log into your account. once you login can you show the output of df -h?

SInce unraid doesn't seem to have a file viewer in the gui, you kinda have to do it this way, so its kinda annoying.

Would shell be the terminal?

Just look at whats on it from the GUI

On the Main Page, click the folder icon on the right hand side >>>>>

Edit: Also under the Shares tab, you should set all the shares to "No" not "Yes", so then all new files are going to /mnt/user instead of /mnt/user0 (cache)

Ahhh thank you. It's the system folder, no files. So maybe that 22.6GB is just... system allocated?

Click on the 'system' folder and have a look.

If it's just libvirt.img, that file doesnt matter and will be regenerated.

No plugins, no docker, no vms, just stock unraid. I think it's just allocation for the btrfs file system.

That's all that's in there! Pretty much all I need to know then, thank you so much. I'm going to remove the cache drive from the machine. It's nice to know I don't have to "waste" an SSD on cache over a gigabit network.

btrfs doesn't just allocate space like that, there has to be something on it, and im pretty sure its not snapshots.

Since you aren't using VM's, you can just disable it to keep UnRAID healthy.

Go into Settings > VM Manager, and change "Enable VMs" to No.

Powered down, removed ssd cache drive, powered back up, logged in, everything seems to be present and accounted for. No missing directories. How strange, not sure what the whole issue was, but I'm indifferent toward the situation. Considering I have an immediate use for the SSD as well in a more mission-critical RAID1 that I've been wanting to do, I can consider this case closed. Thanks for helping me understand some of the terminology and how to navigate the UnRAID UI.
