Headset not working

When my friends laptop shut down yesterday he turned it on the audio wasn't working. He is using the headphone jack. I tried updating the audio drivers and a windows update neither worked. Any clue why its not working? Any help is welcome.

does he have the correct sound output selected? 

Has he tried a different set of headphones/speakers?

I tried a USB head phones and those worked. He does have the right one selected.

I went under the MaxxAudio and when its selected on headset instead of giving him the on ear option it gives him a large medium or small option.
