Do two 4gb dimms. Doing 4 2gb dimms would be a waste of space and not much of an improvement in performance, if any

Hi I have a Motherboard that has support for 8 gbs of ram in 4 dimms so idealy its 4x2gb sticks and I was wondering if i put two 4 gb sticks in if it would work?

Motherboard: MSI P965 Platinum

from the website:

• Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 1.8 Volt DDRII DRAM

• Supports up to 8GB memory size (DDRII 533/667).

• Supports up to 4GB memory size (DDRII 800).

• Supports dual channel DDRII memory architecture.

• Supports DDR2 533/667/800 memory interface.

so it will depend on what speed DIMMS and Front Bus Speed (FBS) are being used.

so from reading the manual i get you can:

run 2x2GB or 4x2GB DDRII 533/667 (populate Slot 1&3 or 2&4 or all 4x 2GB) or

run 2x2GB or 4x1GB DDRII 800 (populate Slot 1&3 or 2&4 or all 4x 1GB)
