RAM stick addition.

So, I had an old pc under the bed that I used ages back, and I took it apart just to see if anything was usable.

 

Well, apart from an awful lot of dust, not much was.

 

There were 4 stick of RAM, 1gb each, that I pulled out.

 

I currently have 16gb and (as expected) have two slots left to put more in.

 

My question is, is there anything to be gained from putting in an extra 2gb of RAM (even for the short term) and will my computer automatically recognize them and make use of the extra RAM?

 

Does it cause any kind of imbalance if you add the wrong kind of RAM, as i usually hear people talk in increments of 4 for RAM and 18 sounds odd...is that just me?

 

I apologise for my naivety, but I'm just learning all this from scratch.

 

Question: is it worth bothering with such a small amount and will the 2gb of RAM be recognized by my computer automatically if I did put them in?

What kind of motherboard do you have now?

How old is this RAM?

It's very possible you've got DDR2 RAM (the 1GB sticks) and you're running on DDR3 or DDR4 now in which case it won't work and won't fit.

I think they are ddr2 and I'm currently on 16 gb ddr4.

 

Should I just sling them?

There is no way they will fit, toss them.

Yeah DDR2 is fairly old at this point. Think around ~2004 I believe...

Yes, I pulled it from an old workstation thing my mother used in her office years ago.

 

I got it in 2017 to download PES option files onto a USB stick for my ps4.

 

Even got Flight Simulator 2004 to run on it...albeit with no frills.

 

Anyway, thought I'd pull it apart and see if anything was usable.

 

Out of the components it had the four sticks of RAM, a hard drive, a CD/Disc drive, and two small fans, that still work.

 

None are really suitable for a modern gaming rig though, it seems.
