I need help on my NAS build.

I'm trying to build a Nas for video streaming on multible devices. I'm however no specialist and I'm not sure on my component selection. 

 

case: silverstone gd08

cpu: i3 9100

mb: asrock B365m pro4

power supply: Be quiet 600w

Ram: corsair vengance 2x8gb

boot drive: WD black 750 Gaming m.2 250gb

hard drive: seagate iron wolf 4 tb x4

What os are you using?

 

What are you using for video streaming? Do you need transcoding?

 

How much more would 10th cost, you might as well if its a simmilar price.

 

I normally try to get bigger hdds as they are a better $ per tb, and allow for easier expansion.

I need it for my video Library. not sure on the transcodeing.

the 4 Tb is almost half the price per gb compared to the 8Tb and 16Tb

For freenas that boot drive is overkill, id just get a cheaper smaller boot ssd.

 

Are you using plex? Or just using a cifs/nfs share?

Looking at pricing, a 8tb ironwolf seems to be about 200, and a 4tb is about 100, but you get a lot in expansion for the future. ALso if you want to save money, id get shucked external drives, you can get 8tb in those for about 140 usd or less.

well 10th is not available in my country until january. So you suggest to just get a like a 250gb ssd for the os? 

I dont know the 4 Tb cost about 80 CHF and the 8 Tb is like 220 CHF. So it seems like a good deal here.

yes I use Plex. But I also will want to stream my own data, Since I have to travel a lot. 

I don't need the cheapest but I don't want to leave money on the table either.

Yea a cheap ssd will work fine here, even 32gb will be fine. Id get a lower end drive Performance won't matter for the boot drive either.

 

Yea the 4tb makes sense in your market.

 

With plex streaming over wan your pprobalby transcoding, the i3 should be fine for a stream or two, but you might want plex pass if you need more than a few streams at once. Plex pass lets you use gpu encoding.

Another option that was mentioned and is worthwhile considering is shucking a WD 8tb easystore or WD 8tb elements. It's more of a hassle to pull the drives out of the enclosures and you would have to put them back in the enclosure for any warranty replacements, but they tend to be significantly cheaper. You can't go smaller than 8TB for the WD external drives though since you end up with SMR drives in that case (16tb in the case of Seagate).

 

In terms of the boot drive, FreeNAS only boots off the drive and loads fully into memory -- so even a cheap 16gb flash drive is more than good enough. Even if the flash drive fails, all you would have to do is load the configuration file back into a fresh install on a new flash drive. You can even add a second flash drive for redundancy if you don't want to worry about waiting around while you reinstall FreeNAS on another flash drive in the event of a failure.
