RAM help please

I know how to install ram and many of the differences and details, but there are a few things i don't know. I am upgrading/ installing more ram into my ultrabook (definitely not a gaming machine), but not completely sure as what to get. I currently have 1 ram slot populated and one open. These are all the specs I have for the ram: 4Gb DDR3 SDRAM SODIMM, 1600 MHz, Pc3, 12800. Preferably I would like to save money and only buy 1 ram stick (or dimm whatever you want to call it). At the stores where I Have looked, they have ram of the same spec but in 1 stick of 8 Gb, and a kit of 2 sticks with 4 Gb each. My primary question is can i buy the single 8 Gb stick and have it work on my laptop to total 12 Gb total? I know that if I were to take the 4 GB stick out the 8 Gb stick would work but will both work at the same time? If you need any more info, it can be found in the link at the end. of course there are variations in the link. mine is a core i3 (intel) cpu with windows 8. If anyone can help that would be GREAT!!!!

You can have an 8 gig stick and a 4 gig stick in the laptop but I don't know if it'll even support more than 8 gigs of ram. HP's website is useless for finding that out, but to be safe I would just buy another 4 GB stick.

It should work. I don't see any problems with adding 8 gigs of memory. 

Though, it's always better to have two memory dims with the same amount of gigabytes. 

This Laptop will only need 2 x 4 gigs with a total of 8 gigs., as you said you want to save money and you will never use 12 gigs.

Thanks. Just realized that, in fact i would never get to the point where i would need 12 gigs. although i sure as hell need more than a single 4 gb.

That laptop can handle 16gb of ram, just get 2 sticks of 4 and you will get 8gb whichis enough for most people.
