How do ARGB Case fans work?

I was exploring cases earlier and I decided that I will buy a case with pre included fans to save some money.

 

The case I have my eyes on is the Lian Li Lancool ii mesh black.

 

My understanding is that it has 3 front mounted fans that plug into an included controller. 

 

Now what I don't understand is how you control the colour of these without the button on the case.

 

Do you plug in the controller to the motherboard and control it through there?

 

Further insight would be much appreciated.

The RGB connector on the fan hub will allow you to change color in your RGB software. 

However, the Lancool II Mesh RGB case has an RGB controller on the top of the case.
