3950x overheating

Hey guys,

Just got a 3950x and no matter what I seem to do it the temperature is always really high.

The idle temps are between 60 to 70 degrees with nothing but Ryzen master. I've tried to lower the voltage but that doesn't seem to affect it. When I run cinebench r20 it pegs it at 95 degrees and throttles down to 1.8ghz giving me a cpu score of 4700.

I upgraded from a 1700x and never had an issue with it before

Specs:

Ryzen 9 3950x Corsair h110i gt Asus crosshair vi hero -x370 Bios :7901x64

Any idea of a fix or is it just a dead CPU!!

UPDATE:

 

without me changing anything I turned it on today and the idle temps are bellow 40 degrees and max out at 65 degrees in cinebench r20 giving me a score of 7300 at 4.1Ghz. No idea what has happened

You need to put a heatsink fan or some other cooling on it... Since you didn't provide that info, I will assume you aren't using anything

 

But in all seriousness though. What is your cooling solution?

 

Edit: duh I see it now... h100i... hmmm is that a new AIO or the old one from the 1700?

If it was the old one from the 1700x, maybe double check that it is making good contact with the chip? If it is a new one, double check that you removed the plastic from the block.

that's abnormally high yes, especially for a 240mm AIO

can you try resetting CMOS? just in case you had some iffy settings in there

can you feel if the radiator is warm/hot?

old one, I've tried to reset it a few times and when I removed it looked like it was making good contact

Can you verify that the pump is running in iCUE?

yeah ive reset the cmos and tried even lowering the voltage as it was originally at like 1.4V

 

Radiator is getting a bit warm and the tubes feel warm as well

yeah pump is showing up running at 3120rpm

I know one issue I had with the NZXT z73 before I returned it was that the pump just wasn't going, so I was getting next to nothing cooling from it. maybe it's something similar, I doubt it tho. Just a possibility.

Yeah, those temps don't sound right. I mean I know it is a high core / thread count CPU so a lot of heat is going to be generated in a small space. But I would expect you wouldn't thermal throttle. At least not that much.

idle at 1.4v is normal for ryzen, what voltage did you set? hopefully below 1.275v because or else it's gonna be hot running chip

at stock it should lower to about 1.275v when under load, but idle above 1.4v

i set it at 1.25V and it was still giving me 55 degrees

so stats for me, I've had my PC set between medium and high on folding the past 3 hours. I got a 3950x, cooling with a nh-d15, and I've yet to hit above 83

3950x commonly idles anywhere from 50-65. And mine does at factory clocks and voltages.

my next step will be to try my old v8 gts and see if that explains

it looks like your voltage setting didnt get applied, it's at 1.38v (at idle, at least)
