Hey everyone,

I'm building a new, very basic home server. I'm planning on running Windows 10 Server 2016 with an SFTP and VPN. I can't seem to get my SFTP recognized on the open web. I believe my VPN is blocking the connection. I talked to the provider, they said outgoing connections of that nature aren't supported. I know that people will say a VPN isn't necessary with a SFTP, I want the VPN for other uses. Basically I want to be able to access the SFTP while the VPN is active.

Does anyone have a work around I can use or a different VPN provider that allows for an FTP? Or maybe a whole different way to do it? Or if this is possible at all?

Thanks for your time

So, what are you trying to do hear? VPN for secure connections into the server from WAN (out in the world), or VPN for obfuscated traffic out to WAN?

In most "server" situations, your using a VPN to get into the server securely from out in the world... In that case you would run a VPN on the server itself and connect to it from your remote device, then no need to SFTP at all.

If your trying to obfuscate traffic from the server out to the world (I guess my question is... why?), this would be rather difficult as its up to the VPN provider to allow port 22 (or any port) to be port forwarded to your device. Also, seeing as your VPN IP will likely be changing, your going to need to use something like no-ip for a DNS forwarding address which will update as your WAN IP changes. But, still not sure what VPN would allow for SFTP connections.

Even if you are doing case number 2 above, you still could run a VPN server on your server and VPN in directly, wrapped within the other VPN - VPNception! But, again, knowing the use case here would be a lot more useful for us to help. Why/what are you trying to accomplish?

Thanks for your reply, the VPNception sounds like the best solution for my use case. So I would install a VPN server, then use the other VPN on the server, effectively having two VPNs on the server?
