Okay, back in february of 2018, LTT released a Holy S#!t episode giving a tour of General Fusions nuclear fusion research facility. Basically I haven’t found much content discussing the video or Fusion in general so I think it’s high time we started one. I’m not that smart and have a hard time understanding what is said in for example general fusion reports. Thus I am asking the community for help which I think that others also would appreciate. I also find this to be realitvlet important as it discusses a relativley imporant alternative energy source.

alternative energy source.

Sadly, until we can make a working fusion reactor, this will remain "theoretical"

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Well I guess it depends on what you mean by "working". There are several that work BUT they need more energy input than they output to sustain the reaction. So I guess if you mean sustained reactions that produce more energy than they need to keep working, correct, there aren't any that work.

Currently with the tech we have we could build one, but many of the parts to make the fuel for the reaction are not in an abundance on earth. They have pinned it to two different reactors One with lazers and one without. Currently, no one is investing in it due to the uncertainty of the projects. Lol, I did a paper on this in 7th grade...

There are not that many sources with this topic as of like 2015. I have like three papers to go off of. Hopefully, today there are more creditable sources with this topic

If you have any sources that could be useful for a potential disucssion, please provide them. I myself has been tasked with writing a paper on the subject and it got me interested which led me to make this post. So far, I've been reading some of US NRL raports and a copule of the General Fusion posts.

If they need more energy in than they output, then they are kinda useless currently. Progress sure, but not useful for a society at large, unless you have an excess of energy you need to use.

One of the only reasons they are trying to research it is because of the dangers of nuclear fission. Nuclear fusion would has it disadvantages. Also, the funding is just not there, and smaller countries could use this if they don't have the capacity to handle nuclear substances.

ITER might solve that though it's not due to be finished until the mid 20's

We better not play with those things in 2020!

Anyway, let's say that we want to create a mini-sun on a lab. Krzegsat has a nice video about it (as some one link above) and we are always 50 years away from success, so we don't really mention it in any serious conversation about energy

I see this thread as I'm sitting around watching a YouTube video about "The Demon Core".

Fusion seems like a pipe dream (maybe), but are thorium breeders the current future in fission reactors?
